To be released so soon after SSX meant it would have very little extra, just a few extra video clips, maybe another character or two. On the whole, it sounded very unappealing, and I had decided not to get it.
Fortunately, that was never released, instead, along came Tricky. Although it still has some similarities to the original it appears to have been vastly improved/expanded/fine tuned, so that it could be an essential purchase.
However, two things stand in the way still. Is it now all about tricks? According to a preview in PSM2 the amount of racing is less, and the focus moves more towards tricks. I think this could be a bad thing as one of the best things about the original was the perfect balance between the two elements of the game. You couldn`t have one without the other.
More speed = Greater tricks.
More tricks = More boost, so more speed.
Without this balance it could be a major downfall. However, when viewing some movies of Tricky today, I could see that there is certainly a racing element still intact, much like the original, though the question still remains - to what extent does the racing count now?
Hopefully this point shouldn`t be a problem, and there will be plenty of racing as well.. hopefully, but it remains to be seen. The other point though is the Uber tricks. How well will these work? Until now, I thought they were a bad idea. I had continuously thought they`d be too hard to integrate into play, and that when they were eventually achievable, they may look unrealistic, especially to newcomers to the series.
Fotunately, this point was also cleared up today, (again during some of the videos I watched). Several clips I saw showed Uber tricks, and simply put, they were amazing! Whilst fans of Tekken may hate Eddie, we still have to admit that Eddie did look very graceful spinning around, in one long fluid motion, and thats exactly what the Uber tricks are like! Imagine Eddie, spinning his legs, whilst flying through mid air, with a snowboard inches away. It really does look impressive.
So.. with new improved tricks, and *hopefully* the same racing balance as before, SSX Tricky, may just turn out to be as stunning as the original. It`ll certainly be in the running for the top game of the year!
Unlike those people I havnt got SSX so I will be looking forward to SSX Tricky. I hope it will be as good as the original if not better.
Many people will be turned off by this fact because the game was excellent at getting racing and tricks to be as good as each other. If SSX was just about racing, it wouldnít have been as good as it is. Same goes for if it was just tricks. Tricky has to make sure that it doesnít go one sided and not to just concentrate on tricks because it will not sell well. I donít think it will though- I am sure it will keep the excellent balance between tricks and racing.
It would be silly not to bring out a sequel to SSX because it is (personal opinion) the best game available for the PS2. However, when EA BIG said that it wouldnít have any new tracks etc. just a few video clips everyone was put off from buying it- I know I certainly was. Now though it looks like they have worked very hard on making it a great sequel- it has 6 new characters and two new tracks and with dozens of new tricks. The levels that were in the original are in tricky but this time totally tarted up and apparently you can hardly recognise the tracks anymore. Which is a great thing because it will be like playing on totally new courses. You will have to brush up on your skills if you want to be the best SSXíer around!
Another big new feature of the game is that you can not gig some more ìbig airî giving you more time to do tricks. This was definitely needed because in the original the air-time you got wasnít much to rave about. Now though- you get much more time to bash away at the buttons performing white-knuckle combos.
Each character will also have extended bios so you can know more things about them to pick the character you most like. To make the characters even better we are being treated to hollywood stars taking the roll of the voice acting. All this is just making me want the game even more now.
The two new tracks are looking stunning! One even has a vertical drop- yes a vertical drop! Donít be disappointed that there are only two new tracks though because I hear they have more shortcuts and even more new areas for us to play around with. It takes a good player to complete the track finishing in first place but it takes a pro to find all the shortcuts the game has to offer.
So, I am glad to say that tricky is turning out to be a great sequel, and I am sure it can only be better than its original. Donít forgot it has new courses, more ìslangingî matches between rival players, more characters, improved speech, better music, more tricks, and more air time. With all of this, tricky sounds like it is going to be the perfect sequel all us PS2 owners have longed for.
EA BIG at one big task to fill out and that was to make tricky appeal to people who had SSX original and to the people who have not got the original. So far, I think they have succeeded in doing so because I have the original and plan on getting tricky and my best mate hasnít got the original and is also going to get tricky. I know that is just two people though and not everyone will think the same. There are going to be some people that are not going to but the game because they think it will be too much the same as the original which is a fair point- and I am sure those people will wait to hear everyoneís verdict on the game.
For anyone who isnít sure on buying the game I would just say to those read plenty of peoples reviews on the game, rent it out for a couple of nights then if you like to buy it from SR. If you donít like it obviously donít buy it and just be happy that you have saved yourself £40.
Iím not sure about the rest of you but I am counting the days until tricky in released!
I will be getting this for definate (chose it on a GAD :D) and it will be excellent!
