Unfortunately I suffer from one problem which prevents me being able to satisfy these urges.....I own a PC !
I have spent the last few weeks trying to find a PC based beat em up that could match the quality of those that have appeared on consoles over the last couple of years.
I have scoured website after website, and spent many lunch break and after work hours trawling through the shelves of my local Game, Electronics Boutique and PC World stores with no luck whatsoever.
In fact the closest I have come is Virtua Fighter, or Virtua Fighter 2, both of which are now available on Sega's budget range.
But, why should I have to settle for a game that old ?
I haven't spent the last few months, and significant amounts of money, building a PC that can quite happily cope with games like Max Payne to buy something that wouldn't even know what to do with a 3D accelerator, or anything above 16MB of RAM.
Things got so bad this past weekend that I almost brought myself to purchase a PS2 now that the price has been slashed, but I had promised myself that I wouldn't buy a console until I had seen the X-Box in action.
In fact, I am hoping that the X-Box's close resemblence to a PC will finally bring good quality fighting games to my reach without the need for a console.
If games like Virtua Fighter 4 & WWF Smackdown are ported to the X-Box, then I can see no reason why they shouldn't be made available to PC owners as well.
We don't all sit around all day playing Real Time Strategy games, or those from the Sim series.
So, what can I do until sometime early next year, when all the next gen consoles are on the UK market ?
Well fortunately I have found a partial saviour. I have recently rediscovered the wonder that is Arcade Emulation, and have spent the last few evenings downloading games like Street Fighter Alpha 3 and King of Fighters 99 in their original arcade glory. OK, so they aren't exactly up to date, but you can't beat the gameplay, and my PC will run them without problems.
The graphics may not be 3D and they can't compare with Max Payne, but if you want to play the best beat em up on the PC it's your only option.
Regards
Andrew
It's like buying one of those people carriers that are offroaders. It does both, but it doesnt offroad as good as a land rover, and it doesnt carry people as good as an offroader.
Horses for courses and many other strange comparisons...
