But my latest thought has been on the subject of complicated games...
Looking at Super Monkey Ball, Bust-A-Move and Columms you see simple games... all of which have seen moderate success whether it be on a console or in the ardade. Have you ever wondered why they were so successful? I suppose you could go on about how they're addictive like coffee and cocaine, but i think it's all do do with the premise, the idea, what you have to do!
I mean, tilting a platform to direct a primate rolling down a ramp isn't rocket science, and you couldn't really compare shooting identically coloured balls at one another brain surgery... so the common denominator (the thing that all these have in common) is the simplicity.
So, if games like these can see success, why do companies make complicated games? I suppose it's to test the ability, reactions and way of thinking of the gamers... but do we want a test when playing gaming.... sure we do! Finishing a game is like getting through a visit to grandma, although some of you may not enjoy going to visit nan... her food is nice though... you've gotta admit!!
(You're straying from the subject!)
Right well, complicated games aren't necessarily bad, but some times it makes me wonder, how simple games like Tetrix and Wetrix can beat games like Jet Force Gemini and Body Harvest in the game rankings! Complicated games often provide much more of a challenge, and despite varying levels of difficulty, simple games can be mastered and even the hardest levels beaten thanks to a good understanding of the objective!
Complicated games, like MGS2, Zelda: OOT, Shenmue and more noticeably StarFox Adventures and some PC games, seem to be worth the disc or silicon they're printed or copied to! But to pay a Zelda price for a game like columns and tetris is absurd! I suppose if you want a game that badly you hand over the cash... but well... it seems, to me, a little stange.
I don't disagree with the simplicity of some games, and the multiplayer side or games like Mario Kart, Super Monkey Ball and Chu Chu Rocket are all well and good, but really!
The reason i've posted this is because of my negative vibe towards some PC games... I see loads of figures, co-ordinates and lines on games, and before even playing or watching a clip of the game I think:
"Pah, no sale... keep your fancy games away from me, Mr R T Strategy!"
I suppose because i've never had a 3D accelerator, i've never thought much about PC gaming... other than Age of Empires II! But really, comlicated games on Consoles and PC can open your eyes to a whole new world of gaming... GBA style gaming is quick and simple, but if you want a really good few hours of gaming, I suggest some more serious games... the PC is a great format, and even if that doesn't interest you, there are loads of console games that would test your gaming-ness and push it to the max!
Don't shun games too quickly... your dream game might have hit you in the face...!

Congrats, by the way. Nice post. Didn't read it until it won, though. :D
This is really my Dad's PC.. he got it from DELL and it was super up just for office work... he had all the programs, professional this, fancy that, Office 2000 and all the rest, but he only got a video-card thingy... no 3D accelerator... shame really, I'd love to have played games like Max Payne and all that on my own computer, but it wasn't to be... I suppose i'll have to save up mopney and get a decent PC, but then again, they're in and out of fashion like a womans pair of shoes! it's hard to tell when top buy... I figure I could steal one and save money....

(LOL @ TW's post!)
Go buy a new Maxx PC, it's crazy how high spec you can get for the low prices. One day games will only be able to use 10 GHz but processors will be so fast that they'll have invented a newer bigger unit and that's just minimum spec. If the X-Box intends to be over 600 MHz that's pretty impressive for a console, it would run pretty much any PC game to date with possible exceptions of some very recent ones (including Max Payne). Of course it wont, but it will get new games of it's own, though they'll probably be converted to PC anyway and quite likely they'll be improved to boot.
I liked GTA, it was very simple and even if it might not seem it to some it's gameplay was similar to Tetris style. It was easy to learn and highly addictive. Another similarity is that the objective was to get score. Of course the missions and humour improved the game too but you could easily put it in the same type of game as Tetris. What's the difference between moving different shaped blocks to make lines for points and commiting crimes in various ways, often using cars for points anyway? Well maybe quite a bit, but never mind that.
:D
They are strangelt addictive ad they are games that are on a pick up and play basis, ever been sitting down and thought i'll play a game for the ext five minutes before I go out (or whatever) you immediently pick up the games that requires no time to 'get into' so the simplicity of them makes them appealing
