A first party cookie is set and read by the site you are visiting. A third party cookie is set by another site (eg the commercial banner services). All our cookies are first party.

Under W3C specifications, they don't exist, but I'd guess that a first party is one set by Microsoft that will probably break the rules, such as passport cookies.

What's this about passports you say? Well, I'll explain: Under specifications, cookies can only be read by the domain that set them. However, if you sign up for a passport, it will automatically sign you in to all passport sites, no matter what domain. Therefore, Microsoft have told IE to cheat an give out the cookie to more than one domain.
