In the Freeola PHP support section it says that Freeola only supports PHP4.
Does this mean that scripts that require PHP3 won't work on their servers or is PHP4 backward compatible.

It's always best to ask if your not to sure, generally theres someone here who'll know the answer, or will try and find it for you.

PHP4 is an extension of PHP3. There shouldn't be any differences because all the same functions and structures should be there.
Nah, your ok, PHP 3 Scripts will work, just make sure they arn't ending with .php3 if they are, change it to .php then it'll work fine.
