OK I'll admit I was quite sceptical about Enterprise but I was presently surprised at the pilot episode. As the quote above says, It's Star Trek but not as we know it. In fact Enterprise is more similar to Star Wars than Star Trek.
If you forget your preconceptions on Star Trek and all its franchise's and take this series for what it is then I am sure you will enjoy Enterprise. Enterprise is a fresh take on tired franchise and if the series progress with the depth which made DS9 so good, then Enterprise is sure to be the must see sci-fi series.
The pilot episode is based upon mans first exploration outside of earths solar system. The aforementioned has finally been aloud by the Vulcan high command, 100 years after "first contact" with the Vulcan's.
I won't go into too much detail as the rest of the plot is hard to explain but It evolves around Captain Jonathon Archer and his crew returning a Klingon (who crash landed on earth during a persuade with another alien species). The story evolves and the Enterprise gets caught up in a battle, the captain gets shot but survives and good overpowers evil and stops the downfall of the klingon empire.
The technology in the series is "primitive" by star trek standards but the story (at least this time) wasn't based around it's failings. Warp is at 4.5 compared to Voyager which once broke the warp 10 barrier. Similarities on a technological note to star is the lack of human transports (or at least until the end) with the crew walking in and out of ships. Language translators are also extremely primitive with humans being able to communicate with Vulcan's but Klingons sounding like Chewbacker.
From my description, you may not be impressed but look out for Enterprise (Sky One, Probably January)and as I have said previously I am sure that you will be suppressed.
If its true, then i just hope this older looking ship (and i use the term loosely here...) has a working airlock, then we can flush this annoyance out into space at the first signs of the dreaded irritatum Neelixia.
One thing I forgot to mention was the appalling opening titles. A "Gillette" styled "hero" song. No ship flying past the screen, no stars, just a picture of earth overlayed with various diagrams from Leonardo de Vinci etc and intercut with real video of a NASA space crew.
Also I am quite sure that a rumour I herd is true. One of the actors was supposedly the white Barbour in Desmands. I can't recall his real name or his characters but I am sure it's him (When you watch it, it's the Guy with blonde hair and that an English accent
Dr Phlox anyone...?
:)
