Unlocking Z-Mystery
Top Nintendo producer Ken Lobb talks about the controversial Z-button on the controller.
October 3, 2001
While attending Nintendo's Gamers' Summit here in sunny Los Angeles today, we had a chance to meet with Ken Lobb, who has produced classic Nintendo games like Killer Instinct Gold and GoldenEye 007, and chat about various topics concerning GameCube. While talking about the GameCube controller he offered his personal opinion on the Z-button, which has been extremely controversial because of its asymmetrical placement and
"My opinion of the Z-button is that it is more like a select button than an action button. The position makes it easier to reach so you don't have to pull your thumb off of the analog stick," says Mr. Lobb. "We're using it for this in a lot of our games and we're encouraging third-party developers to do the same. We want your fingers to be resting on the L and R buttons."
He went on to stress that seeing it as an action button like the rest isn't how it should be viewed. The shape of the Z-button has even been formed so the finger has to be extended and curved inward to press it. Apparently Nintendo didn't overlook the design of the button at all, but rather decided to create an alternate button that could serve multiple purposes outside of the standard action buttons.
However, there's no guarantee developers won't try their best to use it as an action button for certain games. Whatever the case may be, the explanation is one of the first that rationalizes the design, as the rest of the controller design is so intuitive.

So there saying is that if some developer decides to use this Z button as a action button lets say the fire button for a FPS then were all going to have sore fingers? Nintendo want it more as a select button apprently so its not much of a an easy button for repeated pressing?
Somone who has played a GC, I know there are 1 0r 2 people from here who claim they have, is this button easily reachable? What would be the effect on our hands if we had to repeatedly use it?
Why must Nintedo be so different with everything they do? If it's revolutionary then fine, if its going to make gaes better than fine. Firts it's the shape of their console, then their only announcing local internet play with up to 3 players (what the hecks the point in that?) then this.
I think everything will be just fine once we get our grubby mits on it for the first time, don't you worry.
Shocky.
