Just think for a second if Nintendo didnít exist.
Do you think it would be ok in the Gaming world?
Do you think that Playstation as many know and love would be around?
Yes?.
Er... well think again!. Or you could just read on.

Could we possibly see this sort of Hardware alliance again in videogames? Letís face it, the Playstation as we see it today would never had existed without the expertise of Nintendo.
As strange as that may sound to some, it is true!, Nintendo and Sony where in their glory with each other working closely, in fact, ëToo closelyí on the advancement of the Super Nintendo.
The PlayStation is the product of the un-consummated relationship between the Sony Corp and Nintendo of Japan, that is a well publicised and well known fact. The PlayStation was the name and designation of the ëSNES CD-ROMí. I can happily remember reading reports of this supposedly wonderful add-on and itís possibilities. I saw diagrams and Sony Sketches of it and it kept gamers across the world waiting with wonder and baited breath.
With the excitement, NCL and the Sony Corp continued to be Jointly combined, in a strong effort, in order to create this CD-ROM peripheral for the SNES; for the purpose of competing with the Sega-CD.
Sketches made it to the worldís gaming press of ëThe Playstationí sitting snugly attached to Nintendoís system, with even photoís of Super Nes Joypadís with the Playstation logo upon them. This got more people excited, However, NCL suddenly defaulted on the agreement and re-announced the SNES CD, to be developed by Sony Rivalís- Phillips Electronics, a European corporation.
Sony where reportedly furious and the SNES- Playstation never came to fruition. However Sony where left in the lurch with an effectively completed machine, with Nintendo expertise and thinking in itís innards.
Nintendo wasnít expecting their joint adventure to go Solo. Who could blame Sony into thinking of releasing it? it was stuck with a working model of the SNES Playstation, with a lot of too much hard work woven like a spell about it.

And so the Major turning point happened, the work on pursuing the project as a stand alone console started to materialise. Sony Corp with Nintendo secrets in hand enhanced it, combined it with LSI Logic Technologies for chip design, and finally released it into competition with the 'next generation' consoles, with its sights set primarily upon the looming Nintendo Ultra 64, itís sole intention for competition and the thoughts that the Playstation would do well. And didnít it just!

So think about it again. A world without Nintendo.
And think again what things it helped to bring into this world..... intentionally or not.

?

I'm sure that Sony did design the PS2 chip!
That's why they are trying to build servers that use the chip, and completely diversify the market for them!

After all, Sony are probably one of the largest chip manufacturers in the world... they make all the chips for their DVDs, Video Cams, PS2s etc etc!

Certainly true of the PSX, but Sony have always made PS2 chips themselves... which has been a disaster.

First, producation was slow, and the number of faulty chips was high. So they build a new plant to make better chips faster.

Then this went wrong...so Sony ahd to relocate to the first plant again!

By the time the chips were made they had to air lift the PS2s to Europe to cope with the release.

Which lost them lots of money.

I think Sony build a fair amount of it themselves, although they didn't make the chips. However, because they make DVD drives, sound & visual cirucits and various other parts as a matter of course, they can make them cheaper and of a higher quality. Also, because a DVD is a standard format, they are almost as cheap to make as Optical Discs, why aren't standard and need specialist equipment.

I think you misunderstood. Sony are not just a console maker. They make HiFis, DVD players, VCRs etc. So they can make all the parts to the PS2 themselves.

Saying that though, Sony isn't strictly one company. There is the part that is in control of the console production, there is one in charge of DVDs and VCRs (who hate the console part of the company for putting a DVD player in the PS2!) etc etc.

Nintendo are just a console maker. They cannot possible make all the chips and casing for the GC... so they don't! That's the way it's always been!

Eye, but Nintendo don't actually build that much of the console.

Well, like the N64, all the internal bits will be made by other companies. Silicon graphics made the N64's chipset... IBM will make the GCs. Panasonic will make the actual casing of the machine, and loads of other companies are in on the act.

I think Sony are the only company with the diversity to make EVERY component in their consoles. But even then, Sony is essentially many different companies roled into one.
