I sit watching as Nintendo fans leap for joy at Resident Evil (which is a lie considering how much I had to say on the matter) but I wasnít as enthusiastic. Yes as a dig at Sony this was great we get 6 Resident Evil games on a so-called ëKiddies Console!í I also happen to love the Resident evil games so playing them all bigger and better and with brand new games after it all on my favourite console sounded great. But my excitement for Resident Evil is somewhat pushed to one side thanks to a certain second party developer to Nintendo Silicon Knights. These highly skilled developers are horror specialists and intend to take on Capcomís Onimusha, Devil May Cry and indeed Resident Evil in the form of a Psychological thriller, Eternal Darkness.

Is this a Resident evil clone? Yes and No, at first glance it may seem like Resident Evil but take a deeper look and you realize this runs much deeper compared to Resident Evilís somewhat B-movie style. I could spurt out the details of the plot but it would indeed take too long. Basically it is about Ancients those who were here long before man but were forced into the recesses of the world. The Ancients want to take control of the world once again and the innocent human race that are unaware of this danger leave their fate into the hands of 13 chosen ones whom include a Monk, a war veteran, a Roman centurion or a girl from the modern day. The Storyline is much deeper than that but they are the basics.

The Camera although again looks like Resident Evil swoop round corners making it a very advanced camera system. The controls are spot on and the graphics are some of the most impressive seen on the Gamecube, It features extremely detailed character models of at least 5500 polygons! The Gameplay relies heavily on everything, the violence, the dark, moving and very adult storyline, the controls, the camera, and the sound but of course donít forget the sanity meter!

If you havenít heard me brag about the Sanity meter then let me enlighten you. Lets say your low on health and instead of attacking a zombie you dash past them, lets say this happens several times. You begin to feel these hideous beasts (which happen to have half of them look different to each other!) are following you, your worry leads to paranoia and you start losing your mind or going insane. Here is just one of many possibilities, you walk along and off goes an arm, odd? Then a leg? Followed by several other parts of your anatomy until youíre a simple head rolling on the floor. Moments later you are where you begun at the start of the corridor perfect fine. This is one of many possibilities, others include weird creatures, all your items disappearing then suddenly reappearing. What effect does this have on the game? Well considering this features weird goings on already you begin to wonder, whatís real and what isnít? Is that 10-foot Zombie for real or a figment of imagination?

Alternate game paths, 40-60 hours gameplay, historically accurate weapons, storyline than spans over 20 centuries, Superior 3D engine includes bump-mapping, radiosity light maps, ray-traced light maps, volumetric fogging, 24-bit color, 640x480 resolution running at 60 frames per second (whatever that means), moody sound effects, Latin is used as well as quotes from people including Edgar Allen Poe the horror writer, and much, much more.

Is it surprising that I look at Resident Evil and smile? I tell you one thing this is one hot future release.

Hereís to the future

Personnally I'm not a big fan of Resident Evil, infact I think it's utter rubbish. It's got extremely limited gameplay, mostly unintelligent puzzles, a low fear factor (if a fear factor at all) and a terrible story. There's very little good that can be said about it, it wasn't original since it was just like a copy of Alone in the Dark which was a good game in it's day, unfortunately though it's day was many years ago. The cameras weren't too bad, they never really blocked out anything but they were never used to make the player jump. Resident Evil tried to do a lot of things but in my opinion it never really pulled any of them off and while it may have had it's moments they just weren't enough to do anything to help the games out.

As for this Eternal Darkness game it doesn't make me excited. Wasn't Devil May Cry rubbish as well? If so why mention it? Anyway, unless this Eternal Darkness game can manage to make it's plot good and make it told in an effective manner then I doubt it'll be much more than a Resident Evil clone. Of course it would also have to have better puzzles (not really that difficult), more things to make you jump (a possibility with the insanity thing) and an interesting combat system might be good too. The insanity meter feature does sound interesting but I wonder if it will add as much to the game as you hope. There are a lot of possibilities for failure, for example that it appears too often and so you are beginning to wonder which odd thing will happen next. Another possibility is that it gets in the way too much and becomes more annoying than fun boosting. It could end up that the insanity meter is just a novelty feature in another Alone in the Dark clone, which adds nothing especially worthwhile to horror games. The worst thing is that even Alone in the Dark 4 was just an alone in the dark clone, so it makes you wonder how much more they can add to the horror game.

Maybe one day the action horror adventure game will do enough to interest. Perhaps this Eternal Darkness game will be the beginning. Who knows what could happen in the future... MUHUHAHAHAHAHAHAAAAAAA!!!

Alright Resi you smartarse :-P its only 3 exclusives and 3 conversions but they'll be the best of their kind.

I think there's bit more to it rather than the PS2 being awkward and there being no more Sega consoles because other wise the Xbox would be a distinct possibility...

As for Eternal Darkness. The screenshots I've seen look pretty nice and I've seen one or two second long clips which look interesting but I've not seen real footage.

It's needless to say that I'm a bit annoyed how on the video with the NGC magazine, all they could muster was a cheap pixellated FMV sequence from E3 which didn't show any Gameplay whatsoever.

A complete waste of time!

Resident Evil only moved to the gamecube because Sony made a mess of the PS2 and Sega aren't making anymore consoles, and it's 3 exclusives not 6 :-D
