Right then. What exactly is Dragonball Z. Basically, Dragonball Z is a cartoon that is shown on Cartoon Network and is based on comic strip. There are several computer games out (well at least in Japan anyway), and loads of merchandise.
Now, let's take a look at the history of Dragonball Z. Well, Dragon Ball was produced by a man going by the name of Akira Toriyama. His mange strips appeared in some Japanese publication known as Shonen Weekly Jump (hmmmm). He at first started off with something called Dr Slump which was quite successful. After thid, he started to come with several different ideas before Dragon Ball was born in the form of a Comic strip appearance in 1984.
Dragon Ball was turned into a TV series just two years later by Toei Studios. It started of with some quirky sagas, but the plots soon took a harder edge, with the corresponding anime being renamed Dragonball Z in 1989. There is also another load of episodes that were made without the help of Toriyama and these episodes made up the Dragon Ball GT series (this stands for Grand Tour).
You might not recognise the name Toriyama, but he did do some work on games such as Tobal No.1 and Chrono Trigger.
So then, what is it all about. Well, it starts of with a Saiyan (Saiya-jin) known as Goku crash landing on Earth in a space capsule. His mission was to destroy Earth, but he banged his head, and completely forgot about his mission. Instead, he became Earth's defender. As said above, Goku belonged to a race of Saiya-jins (translated to Saiyans), which are humanoid beings that have a tail and had the ability to grow to massive monkeys. The story follows Goku and his family made up of wife Chi-Chi and his son Gohan (at the moment, he has only one son, I am not sure if there are more to come, I haven't seen all episodes yet). The title Dragonball refers to the seven mystic balls that have similar powers to that of a magic lamp. When all seven are together, an Eternal Dragon can be called, and this Eternal Dragon can grant wishes.
At the moment, Goku has reached a power that has turned him into a Super Saiyan, as has his son Gohan, and along with the other Z fighters (a group of fighters that also have similar powers, but aren't as powerful as Goku and Gohan) battle to save the Earth from the powerful and evil android Cell.
Why is it so good? Well, it acts like a soap, reeling you in until you are hooked. You will want to follow each character as they age and grow in power. It is the combination of depth, action and off-beat humour that has attracted so many fans.
If you want to catch Dragonball Z on TV, just tune in to Cartoon Network at 5pm. Honestly, it is good, as I am sure all of it's fans will verify.
