I missed a lot of secondary school whilst growing up, due to illness, lazyness, family ness, etc. DAys became long and boring and, particularly when I was genuinely ill, the TV was my main source of entertainment.
Daily habits soon emerged, one of these being to watch the lunchtime edition of Neighbours, which was always followed by some odd programmes usually from the seventies.
This may spark some controvery, but this is how I rated them, understand I became a mild fan of each, so these opinions are not based on a single viewing.
In reverse order:-
8. Bringing up the rear we have "Bergerac". Provides some amusement in the music area, there the fun ends. Sub-standard british tripe that never should have been put in the post Neighbours slot! Belongs on a Sunday afternoon were it can be ignored, much like Ian Mcshain's efforts in "Lovejoy"!
7. Closely following, we have "Petrocelli", not too many fans of this show around. A show about some American-Italian cop. Made in the seventies, a singular good episode were Petrocelli takes on a bunch of bikers in a fist fight is all that keeps this from bottom place.
6. Things start to improve a little now, with "Perry Mason". This show had its ups and downs. It had the occasional celebrity guest star and the odd interesting plot twist. However, the intro music stands as one of the best ever to grace the post neighbours slot!
5. Another step up, we have "Bannacek"(sp?). This was not on for nearly long enough and may have been further up the rankings if it had. A George Peppard solo project that had it all; action, excitement, cunning plans, big cigars... the only thing missing was the rest of the A-team!
4. Currently running on our screens, we have "Diagnosis Murder". This one is usually quite good, has some downs and has some supreme highs! Dick van 'D**e brings a fine comedy element to the detective show. Yes its far more blatant than the others but sometimes thats just what's needed. At its best when "Chachi" from "Happy Days" was in it, but still good.
3. Ironside! An earlier venture by the man we came to know as Perry Mason. Ironside had everything a top detective show needs, plus the (at the time) unusual elements of the hero being wheelchair bound and a regular character that was black! A top show with supreme intro music as well!
2. Only marginally below the number one spot comes "Quincy". Though it only has 3 different plots; a murder that looks like a suicide, a suicide that looks like a murder and "the kids" getting high on Methaqualone(sp?). You always know what to expect from Quincy and its great everytime. Particularly notable is the bit in every message that is "the authors message" when Quincy starts ranting at some government officials. It always started with "Did you know that..." and went on to quote vast numbers of statistics that proved that drugs were bad! Rivetting stuff with a catchy theme!
1. The one the only "Columbo". There's not a classic like it. Set apart from the rest by the fact that the viewer always new who the guilty party was. It boasts many excellent celebrity guest star performances, most notably by William Shatner.
Viewers can always have fun trying to work out how Columbo will work it out! And of course counting just how many time Peter Falk say "er.. just one more thing" every episode!

Diagnosis Murder does deal with serious issues! You obviously don't watch it enough.
Diagnosis Murder is a top quality program. It has a good mixture of humour but also deals with serious issues.
Ironside is good but its not the one.
Diagnosis Murder is brilliant, but too quick to acknowledge its own stupidity.
Quincy however, now that was a passionate show, took itself soooo seriously, you had to love it especially the authuors message!
