Sony have loads. Almost every major game on the Playstation has a sequel either behind it, or coming up soon. Metal Gear Solid, Final Fantasay, Gran Turismo, Tekken, Smack Down, Spyro (not that good) and many more, all have sequels.
Nintendo seemed to have have joined in with all the sequel buisness. The GB has more than the N64 eg. Mario Land, Wario Land, Donkey Kong Land, Lego games and a few more. On the N64 there are not many. Mario Party has versions 1,2 and 3. And there are a pile of Resident Evil and Turok games. The GC is looking to bring sequels when it signs up Sqaure, Capcom, Konami and Namco as well as Acclaim. But the main surprise on Gc was that Legendo of Zelda GC has been turned into a prequel and stars a younger Link instead of the supposed older Link. There is also supposed to be a forth Mario Party game coming far in the future. Around 2003 or 2004.
Microsoft look ready to have some sequels even further on from sequels alreay made on the PC. Like Age of Empires. Bill Gates has confirmed that a 3rd version is in the making. Also there are loads of Sims games coming.
Sega featured there main characters in their sequeled games. Like Sonic (obviously), House of the Dead ( not a character but a continuing Sega game) and Phantasay Star Online (one of the first ever games to be played over the internet). It will soon have a sequel on the GC.
Basically what this was all about was trying to get the fact through that not many new original games are created any more. We are turning into a gaming world of sequels.
Have you seen Ninty's new game Pikmin? It is really original (and strange).
There are games on the way that bost some originality. Ico springs instantly to mind. I think once more developers get to grips with the new hardware, we should see originality injected back into gaming.
At the moment, they're showcasing their talents and the power of the new consoles. Easiest way to do this is by making sequels. Also, I hear a lot of developers saying that older consoles (PSX, N64) just didn't have the power to accurately represent the designers true vision.
Now they've got the power they want to realise their dreams.
..and that.
