Good games......what makes them? Now before I start I want you to know this isn't a topic about whether the graphics, sound or gameplay matter. That arguement has been running for ages now and I think that we all know the answer. Equal amounts of importance is the right way to go. BUt as i said, this topic isn't about this, its about games having a soul.....now, now, don't call the men in white coats just yet, give me a bit of time to explain and then get me packed off into a padded cell :P

Games having souls......however silly it may seem I believe it too be true in some way or another. Think of the best games you have ever played. They will have hit you in just the right spot for you to feel something, something more than enjoying playing the game. More like needing to play the game, just so you know that all turns out well. YOu play through the game, each moment passes and you get more and more drawn into the story and you begin to feel for the character. YOu want them to be okay, you want them to save the day.....you want to be them.

Soon the character you control, no longer seems like a computer generated image, its now more like a second skin for you. You play the game, not thinking about whether your homework is done, your more worried about Link rescuing Zelda. You become the character and the world surrounding them becomes your home. Your crawn into the screen, little else registers, only what is happening in your game. For all you could care, the game is your life.

Your soul becomes the games soul.....the game IS your soul. Before you know it theres no turning back....not until the world is at peace.

Thanks for reading.

Yeah exactly. You kinda empathise with the characters and you fell that everything that concerns them, concerns you as well. This is why FF games are so popular

I totaly know what you mean about games having soles, i feel this is what draws you back to the game when you turn it off, and makes you think about it when your not playing. This is certainly like the Final Fantsy games, there so compelling and emotional they keep you playing.

You may feel this just goes for RPG/adventure games, but i feel this when i play ISS Evo 2. In my life football is a major thing, its my main passion. And to have a game that captures this is something special, and this is what draws me back to it everyday.

i get what u mean . but maybe that is because they dont have the funds to make games that arnt good enough to compete with the top games. it might just be good for a certain group or age range and might have been the first in its class so no the better versions have towered over it making it rubbish.

I have never really thought of that one before, what does make a bad game? And why do the games desginers make them. I think I might do a topic about that to see other peoples opinions. Cos when making them they must realise what they are doing and just how bad it is, if you've noticed though most games get a higher percentage nowadays then what they used to, due to the fact of experence I suppose

you get that weird feeling when you finally finish a game like FF and you sit there silently for a bit.
ah, the bliss

Games that reel you in, get you involved and make you feel that's it's important, whether for a few moments or a longer period of time - that's how I'd define the soul.
Every time I buy a game I'm hoping to find the gaming soul. On play, most are sadly empty, but every now and then a game grips hold of me and lights up my life. Such joy. Searching for a game with soul is why we keep buying and why we keep playing.

i find that when im playin my games aswell, because u get soo annoyed if your person is killed or hert badley like when i play metal gear solid i would try as hard as possible to make snake survive, i also find that in gran turismo 3 u save u for the car u have been wanting for ages get it in your personalised colour and buy new wheels for it and change its oil ,wash it to make it look the part 2 and try not to bash it about when on the track.
