Microsoft has today announced that its Xbox Live online gaming service will boast new "Live Now" functionality come mid-September. Players will also be able to see which of their friends are online and what they're playing, and check out Xbox Live announcements concerning downloadable content, tournaments, new games, and the like.
Also announced today were the Xbox Live subscription rates that will be available for new and existing users in September. The details are as follows:
$49.99 - Xbox Live one year renewal/subscription.
$5.99 - Xbox Live monthly rate.
$29.99 - Xbox Live Voice Communicator.
$69.99 - Xbox Live Starter Kit
The new Xbox Live Starter Kit will include the Communicator headset and a full version of MechAssault."
Whats all this "Xbox live monthly rate" milarky? Is it something only in America?

If I remember rightly the closed beta which adrian was part of started beginning of November, then from the 1st of december anyone could buy the kit for the open beta from the website only. I've been on since 1st december.

Yeah it would be nice. I personally have not been on Live since Christmas. I have actually not really played games as much since Christmas and have quite a few to play. Completed The Getaway, Starfox and done quite a bit of Metroid Prime and Tony Hawk 4 but thats it.
So for me a years subscription is a waste as I only played it for 2 months of the Beta test. I did get my moneys worth as I got the nice carry case and orange memory card. I am probably not going to renew my subscription when its up on March 14th as I never play on it. A monthly option would be great as you could wait til Halo 2 or what ever is out and have a really good month of online gaming and then not worry about wasting £50 on a whole year when your only going to use that month.
The monthly rate thing is an excellent idea!
I think I see Microsofts clever plan.
People who don't want 1 year subscriptions can just go for the "monthly" rate option - Like "pay n go"
