The PS2 isn't even a year old, yet already there are plenty of fine Survival Horror games it can boast about! Rating them all would take forever , so I'll take you though the three that are currently in the shops! I'll be rating them on Characters, Combat, Atmosphere and Difficulty. I'll even throw in an overall score. Aren't I kind!
First up is EXTERMINATION, a pretty cool game that mixes elements from all your favourite games!
CHARACTERS
Extermination only has one playable character, so it’s a good job that he's pretty darn cool! You play a chap named Dennis Riley, your typical hard bloke sent in on a dangerous mission to wipe out a deadly virus (sound familiar?) He's easy to control thanks to the funky 'Panic Action' system that lets you respond to numerous situations with a single button press. But the fact that there is only one character is a bit of a let down. 6/10
COMBAT
Extermination has THE coolest gun on earth! It starts out as an average rifle, but do a bit of searching and you'll find some rather nifty add-ons! These include the Shotgun attachment, flame-thrower and errr. ROCKET LAUNCHER add-on! It even has a built-in torch! Three attachments can be equipped at once. This gives the combat a much quicker pace, as you aren't constantly going into the inventory screen to change weapons! Nice. The only let down is the lock on feature, which sometimes has you targeting puny little worm thingies when a huge monster is standing next to you , D'oh! Overall though, pretty sweet. 8/10
ATMOSPHERE
Extermination is a little low on trouser soiling moments, but the dimly lit rooms, and the purple gunk all over the walls give the game quite a scary atmosphere. There are some pretty nasty moments when your mate Rodger gets zombified, and the last boss is pretty horrific. Certainly not the scariest Survival Horror game though. 7/10
DIFFICULTY
Extermination is the easiest of the bunch by quite a way. Its not a big game either , you should get through it in around 5 hours, so only a 6/10 for this area.
OVERALL
Overall, Extermination is a fine effort. Cool weapons, and an atmospheric setting with lots of purple gunk! Its not that difficult, but its highly enjoyable while it lasts. Worth a rent at least! 7/10
Next up is ONIMUSHA, a game from the masters of survival horror 'Capcom'.
CHARACTERS
During your quest you will take control of Samanosuke and Kaede. Two super hard Samurai out to rescue Princess Yuki. Both characters have unique abilities. Samanosuke has a nifty gauntlet that can absorb souls, enabling him to perform some very cool special moves! While Kaede must rely on her awesome fighting skills, watch in amazement as she flips behind someone and slits their throat. Slicing! 9/10
COMBAT
Onimusha has lots of scrapping in it. So it’s a good job that the game is packed with awesome weapons and awesome special moves! Samanosuke has elemental swords, each has its own special move for reducing your zombie friends into piles of dust! Kaede is armed with a small dagger, and can perform cool moves like the one mentioned earlier. Weapons can be upgraded so your specials become even more dazzling! Taking on multiple enemies is easy thanks to some easy dodge manoeuvres. 9/10
ATMOSPHERE
Onimusha is set in feudal Japan, a very cool idea. You'll spend your time roaming around war-torn temples and beautifully lit shrines. Onimusha doesn't have any jump out of your seat moments, but the atmosphere that the setting creates is fantastic! 8/10
DIFFICULTY
Onimusha won't take long to finish, but it gets quite tough towards the end. It's such a good game, that even when you've finished you'll want to play it again and again. Cool secrets too! 8/10
OVERALL
Onimusha is a great game. The Japanese setting works a treat. The graphics are great, the soundtrack is ALSO great, it's packed with cool weapons and cool secrets too! So give it a go, you won't be disappointed! 9/10
And finally we have RESIDENT EVIL: CODE VERONICA X the original, but is it still the best?
CHARACTERS
Resident Evil lets you control 3 characters. There's Chris Redfield from the original game, Claire Redfield from the sequel (the best of the bunch) , and then there's new boy Steve Burnside. Each character is pretty cool, except Steve. In fact I'll knock off a mark just 'cos he's so annoying. 8/10
COMBAT
You've all played Resident Evil right? You should know that Resi is all about mowing down zombies with any weapons you have! Handguns, Shotguns, Grenade Launchers, and Crossbows! There's nothing wrong with the weapons! The combat does seem a bit dull when compared with Onimusha, but blowing the head off a zombie is still dead satisfying! 8/10
ATMOSPHERE
Resident Evil: CVX is the king when it comes to atmosphere! Dimly lit corridors, twisting camera angles, terrifying music, and yes, LOADS of jump out of your seat moments! 10/10 Easily!
DIFFICULTY
Make no mistake folks. Resident Evil is one tough game. They've cranked up the difficulty of the puzzles quite a lot since the last game, and the game is so big that you won't know where to go next! Ammo is quite rare, so don't shoot zombies you can easily get past (like I did) or you'll find yourself roaming zombie infested corridors with a puny knife! 9/10
OVERALL
Resident Evil: CVX may have aged a bit in the combat department, but its still the daddy of Survival Horror games! Its worth checking out the Devil May Cry demo too! 9/10
So there you have it. Resident Evil: CVX wins, with Onimusha in close second and Extermination in third. I hope you enjoyed my guide to Survival Horror on PS2!
Thanks for reading!
