Like you had to on the playstation with the different types like there was a PAL playstation and you had to get it chipped to play games from the US.

not straight away but people reported after quite sometime it froze more regulary I would only get it for imports so the games industry dont really suffer as much as if it was a pirate in other words only dvd's I will get from america for my ps2

so thats what getting your playstation chipped means.
did it affect the machine in any way other than unlocking other territory games for it
(not that I have a playstation just interested to know whether there were any side effects)
