I really do wonder where the PC market is going to go.

You can equip a PC with copious amounts of RAM at almost no cost(i fully intend to upgrade to 1ghz very soon).
Processor speeds are getting stupidly fast, the current best imo seems to be the AMD's which are far better than the much more expensive PIV's.
3D graphics are incredible, and GForceIII mocks anything commercially available a year ago.
Brand new PC's are bought and sold with hard dirves in excess of 30GB often with (and I recommend) 7200rpm speeds.

So what next? What are we going to see from the PC market in another 12months time?

3ghz processor?
systems with more ram than a modern computer has harddrive memory? (imagine running windows in cache and still having a couple of gig of ram left to spare....
I don't even want to imagine the power of a 3d accelerator...
And hard-drives? Can we look forward to a standard build of a 200gb drive, faster then 7200rpm?

It will be interesting to rate the performance of these against todays computers...

I get my 1.4 Ghz Athlon with 256Mb DDR Ram and a QDI Kudoz 7 motherboard, at a grand total of £240 quid (that does include a fan). I love my local shop. :D

There is an upper limit to CPU speeds in the size of the technology, but even that's being improved..

Doing some research the other day, I found that for less than £1300 you could build yourself a dual Athlon 1.2GHz system, with 512mb DDR ram and a GeForce3..

As an indication of the kind of power available, Sun Microsystems have a Solaris machine available now for $4,140,830.00...

Specs:
72x 900mhz UltraSPARC III Processors
288GB RAM
6x 72GB Hard Drives
6x GibaBit PCI network cars

Spare $4 million anyone?

Well, AMD have out, or are releasing shortly (ie before christmas) their 1.7 GHz chip.

Chip speeds double every 18-24 months (although it has been less recently), so in theory, spring 2003 will see chips around 4Gig.

I imagine they'll be like all new chips, damn expensive for the first 6 months or so, then reducing slowly as more advances are made.

As for HDD, a 7,200 rpm drive was too expensive a couple of years ago, now it's the most common sort. So again, another 2 years or so, and 10,400 will probably be common, with 15,000 being for the "elite".

I shall now commence drooling....

But how long until such specs are available to the public, at affordable prices?

Bearing in mind that you can already get 10,400 rpm HDD at the moment, and that in 6 years time we will have 20GHz chips, I fully expect us to have "ninja" PC's in a few years time.

To give you an example, one at work has a specialised 3.5GHz chip, 2GB of RAM, a 15,000 rpm HDD and a couple of DVD writers as well.

Now *that's* impressive.
