For Your Eyes Only is a taught thriller that injects a healthy dose of realism back into the Bond franchise. It feels more down to Earth, it feels more tense and dramatic, and it feels far more action packed.
When the British spy ship the St Georges is sunk in the Aegean sea, the Navy's prized ATAC transmitter is at risk of falling into Soviet hands. Sent to investigate the wreck, Sir Timothy Havelock and his wife are murdered in front of their daughter Melina.
Naming a Cuban hitman, Gonzalez, for the murder, British Intelligence dispatch 007 to find out who had Havelock killed (and hopefully find out who's after the ATAC). Before Bond can question Gonzalez though, he ends up dead (Gonzalez, not Bond, heaven forbid!) and Bond finds himself teamed up with Melina. Leaving Miss Havelock behind, Bond follows a lead to Cortina where he meets Kristatos and comes to learn of his deep-seated battle with the Columbo.
When James returns to Melina in Greece (following a meeting with Columbo), a salvage operation to retrieve the ATAC turns up all sorts of interesting twists...
Kristatos captures Bond and Melina and intends to sell the ATAC to the Soviets. Though the plot twists and Comumbo, with his last breath, kills Kristatos. Bond retrieves the ATAC, then, rather than giving it to the KGB’s, Bond destroys the device.
The story harkens back to the more tense spy thrillers of the Bond series and although the usual elements are (just about) all in place, this comes across as one of the best in the series and certainly Moore's best outing. Bond feels more human and less indestructible, and we almost get emotion from Mr Moore (eeek). His Bond is a far more genuine character than we'd had for several films and in fact we might be going all the way back to the previous aquatic adventure (Thunderball) for something close. Far more 'vicious' and less comical than the last three films, For Your Eyes only has at its core a Bond that has a genuinely evil streak in him.
Some good performances from the cast, Bond standing out high above most. The film was memorable, realistic and serious. The pre-credits sequence is extremely well done. The extended chase sequences in cars and by skis are technically proficient. In this film Bond is once again a man who relies primarily on ingenuity and wits. Bond is back- and it’s for everyone’s eyes. A top film- 9/10.
