Well no of course there not you’ll get bits of plastic disc stuck in-between your teeth but that’s besides the point.

With the ‘Next Generation’ consoles already out or about to be released the games are looking more and more eye candy, the standard today of graphics in games is astonishing but where will this all stop what happens when the PS5 or Nintendo Rectangle is out? Near life like graphics?

Do we really want near life like visuals for our consoles? Games are supposed to be our escape from reality, arguably life like graphics can be used to make games better say for Metal Gear Solid where it would be like real life only doing the things you’ve always wanted to be doing. Although all games being produced seem to be heading in this direction maybe this is one reason why the newest Zelda game to be released on Gamecube has took a different direction in the way it looks to make it stand out and be different, games create a surreal world for us to play in but graphics becoming more and more advanced could well spell the end for the wacky fun filled worlds that are spread across the platform genre, we may end up playing in worlds that are too ‘realistic’ looking, we still need our cartoony like worlds such as in games such as Banjo Kazooie or Spyro. There are any superb looking games being released for the new consoles but we wont always be wanting life like visuals will we? Games are supposed to be our second homes away from every day life we see enough of it.

Games such as Resident Evil or the GT series would benefit from gorgeous, realistic visuals but we wont want all games to be life like will we? We still want our Mario Karts our Banjo Tooie’s and our Crash Bandicoot’s to play on but we don’t want the graphics to improve do we? Yes we want lighting effects but we don’t want the game and its worlds to look to realistic as these are the games that give us our escape from the real world, our new place to become immersed in, we wont be wanting all games to improve as such as the specifications and ability of consoles go up. What worrying is that one day games just wont look the same as we would want them too, we wont be wanting all our games to be so good looking so to speak.

Microsoft’s X Box as the best looking specs with a nice 733 MHZ clock speed as compared to Nintendo’s 405 MHZ and Sony’s 300 MHZ, this may well mean that Microsoft can pump out the best looking games, but the graphics don’t make the game do they. The most important aspect of the games has got to be the game play, its no good having mouth watering graphics when the game is totally unplayable or has nothing intriguing about it there has to be some sort of a point to the game or an involving storyline to keep the gamer occupied.

Remember the old games on your SNES or Megadrive when graphics were basically the same and the focus was more on making the game fun to play? That’s why most of us still love to go back to our old consoles and have a dab at retro gaming, those were the games that we would keep coming back to even today. So is this advance in visuals in games taking the focus off the game play itself? It’s all very well making Lara Croft more maneuverable (ahem!) but is this taking something out of the playability of the game, it may be more fun and immerses you in the game more but is it as good to play as the classic SNES/Megadrive games you still come back to? You decide.

Don’t get me wrong the games being released are looking great and I don’t want it to stop being that way just that developers don’t seem to be making games that have that come back to and play again factor that so many SNES and Megadrive games had. I do want jaw dropping scenery and blow your mind detail but some games are just better left as they are.

Games released for the N64 is Paper Mario which essentially a 2D RPG proving the fact that people are crying out for these style of games despite the powerful 3D technology. It’s maybe because gamers want something different from the normal and these 2D games are what is needed and the games focuses on being thoroughly playable and enjoyable, maybe something like this could be made for the new consoles?

One day graphics in games will not be able to get any better and then what? Maybe then developers will start concentrating on the originality or playability more, that day will be a good day for gamers.

Your games will need toppings they may look good but looks can be deceiving take a bite out of them before you decide how delicious they really are.

Do you think the advance in technology is taking the playability out of some games?
Compare the newest games to your old classics, do they have that ‘comeback to’ factor?
Are some games better off left alone and more focus kept on the enjoyabiltiy of the game?
What do you think?

Thanks
Andy

There are a lot of new games that have disappointed and lacked a certain element that make them stand out. But with that there have and will be more that stand out from the crowd as being a bit more than special. Take games like SSX, GT3, WWF Smackdown JBI!, MGS2 (can you guess which console I own) These look great, play great and will be popular. The graphics are good and in most cases the gameplay is better. As technology advances graphics will get better and the hardware used to play games will also get better. But I think it will be a while before we ever see real life realistic graphics. There could be some problems using graphics like that too.
Imagine games like resident evil, silent hill and other games packed with gore. Would such games be allowed to be released?

Someone mentioned a bit about consoles and how powerful they are, think it is far to early to determine which is the most powerful, ok so they all have their own specifications as to which is best on paper but that means very little. These numbers shouldn't be used to compare as the internal architecture of all three are totally different. EXAMPLE If you have a 333MHZ processor in one PC and a 733MHZ in another the 333MHz one can run faster than the 733 depending on what software each pc runs, if the 733 has a lot of programs to execute then this can slow it down a lot sometimes making it even slower than the 333.

So I think the only way to really tell is to wait and see. From what I have heard the PS2 is very hard to develop for but you are able to do a lot more things which in my eyes is a good thing for developers. The GameCube is quite easy to develop for and alot of games can be made within a few months but the options to developers are limited. All the consoles will go through a rough patch to begin with as it takes time to get used to developing for it, after that the standard of games on each will rise and then maybe we will see the full potential of each console. One fact that impressed me was apparently GT3 only uses a fraction of what the PS2 is capable for, which means that once the developers learn all the tricks to develop for it then we may see some mindblowing games in the future.

I think that consoles are powerful enough when devellopers can achieve their ambitions on it.

That's why although the Gamecube is said to be the least powerful (I'm still not convinced that the PS2 is more powerful), many of the best devellopers still see the Gamecube as the best piece of hardware.

I know that the Sonic Team, Capcom and Yu Suzuki have all been won over, and others like Squaresoft and Konami (yes Ant, including the man responsible for MGS2) all want to make games for it too.

I don't think I'll need more from a games machine.

All the best games have "realistic" graphics with "unrealistic" (fantasy) gameplay. This is the way it should be.
To all developers I would say this: Just make the gameplay fast, meaty and fun. Forget trying to create so-called realistic gameplay. I'm a fantastist - that's why I play video games. I get a gut-load of reality 8 hours a day at work and it stinks.
Also, realistic gameplay usually means a ball-ache.
I'm rambling, so I'll zip it.

Good answer to this:

Look at Super Monkey Ball. Hardly the most realistic looking game on the planet? No? But it has great gameplay, apparently, and I certainly want to get it. It'll be a laugh.
