We all grow up sometime. Over the past 4 years I’ve matured. I’ve gone from "Girls? Ewww!" To "Girls? Where? Where! "

I’ve grown up and matured... So has my gaming taste. Of course I still love the ‘round-around-senselesly-shooting-everything-that-moves-turkey-shoot’ Kind of games, but I’ve started to widen my gaming tastes. I now love strategy games; I now love Adventure games...

Now, I’ve matured in the sense that I’m not as naïve as I once was. And I’m hoping that everyone else on here has to (Well... Except for Goaty of course :-D) So quite why everyone made such a fuss about Conkers Bad Fur day I don’t know.

It’s not a mature game! It’s as puerile and childish as Yoshi’s Story for God sake! The insults that are used in it are nearly exact replicas of the insults you hear thrown around the playground with such gay* abandon as you’d expect from 11 year olds. The swearing in it? To be honest I can’t think of anything MORE childish than swearing.

Now, this isn’t a topic slating CBFD, because, childish or not, it’s a great game.

When N64 owners leap to the defence of their console in the age old argument of it having "No mature games" You always here the same old list of games.

o Goldeneye
o Perfect Dark
o Conkers Bad Fur Day
o Body Harvest

Think about it, these aren’t mature games. To be mature means grown up, it does not mean run around levels shooting bad guys and alien bug type things. It does not mean swearing pointlessly at everything you come across. It does not mean... I could go on.

To me these kinds of games aren’t mature games. To me mature games are the ones like Management Sims (The Sims, CM Series) Strategy Games (Command and Conquer, Rainbow Six, Operation Flashpoint) and various other types of games. And yes before anyone starts jumping up and down and trying to a smartass by pointing out that the strategy games I listed involve shooting people, I know, but it’s different from other shoot-em ups. You actually have to have some kind of battle plan to succeed.

As well as this ruling out nearly all of the N64’s mature games it also rules out most of the Playstations too... Sorry couldn’t resist that dig :-D

People can go on arguing about the true definition of a mature game, but for me it’s the kinds of games I’ve listed. If you look at it sensically, Mario 64 is a more mature game than Resident Evil is. Sure, Resi Evil has zombies and gore, but Mario 64 has adventure, which seems more grown up to me.

The dictionary definition of mature is grown up, what’s so grown up about shooting things with a double pump action shotgun?

Sorry i have to jump on this :-)

Firstly I think a mature game is one with a mature theme or one suited for an adult, thought I'd just clear that up first.

So what your saying is Mario is an adventure game therefore mature. It's a damn fine game but it's a very simple (but playable) platformer and the "adventure" is aimed at not really kids but more of a family game if you know what i mean.

BUT How on earth can anyone say resident evil is not mature, Put aside the gore, blood and gun blasting which gives it an 18 rating and what your left with is a very adult game :-)
Surely you don't think a younger person will understand the puzzles and very complex storyline, do you?

"I now love strategy games; I now love Adventure games..."

I didnt start appreciating these kind of games until I was old enough to understand them......

Shootem ups are good when youre young (and still are good!), because a headless chicken could probably figure out how to play the games! :-) *Envisages a headless chicken playing time-crisis*

I have to say that my favourite kinda games have changed aswell. I used to prefer playing football games like fifa, but now I opt for the more tactical management games such as Championship Manager.

I just hope that when im 70 years old im not sitting down playing virtual chess against the computer! :-)

That's a mature post that you have written there Rasta, which I do agree with.

I am not saying that I don't play those games that aren't mature though, but my choices of games are more mature than they were 5-6 years ago.

Conkers Bad fur Day is as chlidish as they come (which is why it's so great!!).

I've sort of got to argue with Perfect Dark.
I think that it's a bit too hard and complex to be immature.

As for Mario and Resident Evil...

I'd say that RE is more mature with its slower based gameplay and less action over Mario's action packed skillful jumping and platforming.

I'd still say that Mario's a much better game though.

I'd say that GT3 is a mature game.
Sensible speeds, incredibly realistic, refuses to be exciting in any possible way...

However (and I know that this is going to cause an almight uproar), I think that it's one of the most boring games I've ever seen (presumably because I'm immature), only MS Flight Sim beats it in the Yawning department.

RBS, you should read the topic I did about Maturity a few days back.

See the "So THAT'S what a mature game is" topic.
