There is a misconception that players are after more money. The PFA always used to get a percentage of TV revenue money which is used to look after players and clubs - in need. Hundreds of ex-players (most of whom earn't very little from the game) benefit from the PFA. The PFA often pay for ex-players to have surgery on old footballing injuries and the PFA have often had to pay players wages in the lower leagues when lower league clubs have faced financial difficulties.
The PFA is there to look after current and ex players from all league clubs. Most of the revenue goes to players you or I have never heard of.
The PFA are angered by the Premier League reducing the percentage of TV revenue paid to the PFA. Premier League clubs want a larger slice of the cake, leaving smaller clubs and their players to feed on the crumbs.
Although I would hate to see a footballers strike I think the players should be applauded for their stand - and I hope the Premier League see sense.
> surly it wont come down to a strike?
I think there is a reasonable chance that it will end in a strike - unless the league backs down. Many high profile players (Di Canio, Beckham and Keane to name three) have said they support the stand and would be prepared to strike.
It has emerged today that strike action will probably be restricted to games which are due to be screened live on TV. This makes sense when you consider that the argument is over the proportion of TV revenue set aside for the PFA.
And wot about the champs league?
