Bit ironic really seeing as I scored my first job interview today to get away from the place I've come to hate over the past few months and nobody knows I'm even looking for another job.
Shame really as I was relying on the internet to get me through the days at work until I finally leave for pastures new. On the plus side my interview is with Wells & Young Ltd, or more specifically their Bombadier section. Yep the beer section. And before you say anything I got the interview through a recruitment agency and didn't know who the firm actually was.
*Shakes fist at everyone for thinking otherwise* :D
So if anyone knows how to break the filter on Internet Explorer Version 6 I'd be grateful if you could let me know how. I've only been trying for about 3 hours today........
Well basically I stropped at the IT department that I couldn't download a new vital payroll update ready for the new tax year (even though I have it sitting on my desk on a CD) :D and they gave me free reign again - after all they want to get paid!
Apparently a new "switch" (?) was put on the server and it reset everything so they restored a backup that was made before the work was done and her I am again :)
To get around it you need to use a proxy server. This will send all your connection requests to a third party, whose computers then retrieve the information for you, so you don't make a direct connection to these places.
There are many lists on the internet of free proxies but finding reliable ones is trial and error.

Obviously, the local ones are best.
When you've found an IP for a proxy, you can tell IE to connect to that IP instead of using its defaults but I have no access to a copy of IE so I can't tell you exactly where the option is. They may well have blocked off access to that though, in which case, download yourself a copy of Firefox Portable (see if you can find a zip. Zip => no installation needed. I can't find one at the moment but I've got a copy on my uni drive I could zip up and email to you if you needed) and you'll have free access to the required settings.
And there are also Firefox extensions which add some proxy options, and make it easy to flick between several, etc.
I'll see if I can find a way for you to get through it. Cong Man might have a few ideas.
