Star Wars: Starfighter is based around Episode 1, but also takes you to new and different places in the Star Wars world, and gives you differents insights into the story of The Phantom Menace. It is a flight action/adventure game, and it’s based around the system of the hit Rogue Squadron on N64.
Basically, you will take control of 3 different characters across 14 beautifully designed levels, spanning worlds such as Naboo and Coruscant, and of course, space. Each character has their very own ship, which will have different weapons and the screen in front of you will have a different set out from any of the others.
You will pilot these ships to complete many different missions. In some missions you will just have to shoot down enemies, or protect someone else’s ship, and in others you will have to do things like destroy shield generators or opposing bases.
You will also get bonus goals, and if you complete this bonus goals successfully, you will earn medals. The more medals you earn, the more bonus missions you will get at the end of the game. Some bonus goals are to complete missions under a set amount of time, or they could just be thingks like destroying extra mines or ships.
Anyway, I told you that there were three characters. Your first couple of missions will put you in the body of Rhys Dallows. Rhys is a bit of a rookie, and he was invited to join the Bravo 10 force to defend his homeworld, Naboo. Rhys pilots an N-1 Starfighter.
Then, you become Vana Sage. Vana is employed by the Trade Federation, but is beginning to regret ever joining them. Her starship is called The Guardian Mantis.
Your third character is called Nym. Nym was once caught by the Trade Federation, but he was helped to escape by a crew of pirate bandits (some of his friends). Now he wishes to exact revenge on the Federation. His starship is called, The Havoc.
Each ship has different types of lasers, as well as secondary weapons such as Proton Torpedoes and Plasma Launchers.
The graphics in this game are amazing. The terrains are superb, and the starships are extremely detailed. Finally the PS2 is showing what it can do. Also, the picturesque backgrounds really add to the experience, and ultimately, you can go where you want in the missions (in other words, there’s no annoying barriers stopping you from going somewhere.)
The gameplay is also great. It’s fast and fluid, and the ships are easy to control. There are many different missions with many different objectives, and although you’ll get frustrated occasionally, it’ll be worth it when you’ve finally completed that mission.
The only down side is that there are only 14 missions, but there are bonus levels at the end, and a fun multiplayer mode to reward you with.
Overall, LucasArts have created another classic flight shoot ‘em up, and Starfighter is certainly a game not to miss out on.
Thanks for reading, Ant.
But luckily for me, it was one of the outstanding Star Wars games! You play as Rhys Dallows, The mercenary Vana Sage, and Space Pirate Nym in an attempt to dispose of the evil Trade Federation. 14 missions, flown in both space and planetary airspace, spanning three worlds give you some idea of the size of this game.
When you first start out, you fly as Rhys, in his Naboo N-1 Starfighter, then as the game progresses, you get the chance to fly as Nym, in the ‘Havoc’, a highly unstable but heavily armed craft, and Vana Sage in the ‘Guardian Mantis’. Each ship has it’s own special abilities, and each pilot his/her own personality. As you play through the games, these three unlikely heroes team up to take down the trade Federations blockade of Naboo.
From the very first mission, you can see how much effort has been put into the graphics on this game. The actual ships are very well crafted, right down to the pilots, which can be seen through the windshield! The surroundings also show off the true capability of the PS2’s graphics engine.
Then there are the cut-scenes. We are all used to very high quality FMV’s on the PS2, but the videos
on Starfighter are the best I have seen.
The controls are very straight forward, but the two analogue sticks allow for some really cool manoeuvres in your Fighter. They are really easy to get used to, but also very functional within the game.
As you play each level, bonus goals appear, which allow you to achieve bronze, silver or gold medals on each mission. By gaining medals you also begin to unlock the secrets of the game. There are many bonus missions to unlock, including protecting a mining colony, blasting space debris, and racing through the canyons of Naboo. There are also ships to unlock - you can go back and fly any missions with any of the three basic ships, unlock Darth Mauls infiltrator, and even an experimental N-1 fighter! There are also two player modes to unlock.
Though the game is not one that lasts a long time, the two-player mode gives it a little extra life. It is not particularly difficult, but ‘hard’ mode will challenge a lot of gamers. The plot and storyline are well thought out, as the three heroes lives become entangled with each other’s, and an alliance is formed.
I give it a:
9 for plot
8 for sounds
6 for longetivity
9 for graphics
8 for controls
And 3 for multiplayer, making it an 8 out of 10 game.
Definitely one to add to your collection!
