I know a lot of people on here don't think much of Spielberg as a director and that's something I can't understand. I mean, he has brought us great films such as (among others) Jurassic Park, Saving Private Ryan and best of all, Jaws. However, his new film, A.I. is nothing like anything he has done before. It is much darker than any film I have seen of his and it has an eerie feel that seems to be associated more with David Lynch than Steven Spielberg.

Now I'm not saying that A.I. is bad because of this because it's not. A lot of David Lynch's work I really like. Blue Velvet for one. However, I'm not sure whether I actually liked A.I. There were good parts to it but there were other parts where it just seemed to drag on and it seemed like it should have ended about a half hour before it actually did.

It was nothing like I expected either. I really didn't think it would be so dark. There was one shot in particular, which was done brilliantly and gave a real sense of David's (Haley Joel Osment) isolation - During a birthday party for David's real-life brother, they both fall in a swimming pool. His brother is pulled out and resuscitated but David is just left there, sinking to the bottom. The shot then pulls back, higher into the sky, showing David's body at the bottom of the pool with nobody else in the picture. It's just him all alone. Now David can't drown but it's the fact that nobody was there to save him and pull him out anyway that gives this particular scene its errie feel.

Now the acting was great. Haley Joel Osment was (yet again) outstanding and Frances O'Connor portrayed his mother perfectly, trying to love him as if he was her own live son. Jude Law also played his part very well. In fact, the acting made the film a whole lot better yet I'm still not sure whether I liked it or not. I want to like it because it was different but I'd really need to see it again in order to be sure.

Here's a film where I'd really like to hear other people's opinions on and find out what they think. My friend didn't really like it and the only other person I know who has seen it isn't sure what he thinks. He thought it was very surreal but, like me, he can't decide whether or not he actually enjoyed it.

Er-No said on MSN that it was the only film that left him breathless, if that's any indication.

Thinking back on it now actually, I think I do like it. There were parts which were too long and boring and it did drag on a bit but overall I THINK it was quite good.

You've obviously never seen Eraserhead. That's a David Lynch film but that's a little TOO wierd.

When I first saw them, I thought they were aliens as well, they looked like aliens out of the X-Files but then thinking back, it did become clear they were robots.

To start with - Haley Joel Osment - totally outstanding. I hated him in Sixth Sense, though he totally over acted every single line he had and people let him off with it because he's only three, ri simething. However, in AI he is just astounding from start to finish. Can't explain how good he is - those who ahven't seen it will just have to go and see for themselves.

The film, in general, is okay. Very slow, but if it was more pacey there is a risk it would turn into a Back To The Future style film, which wouldn't fit. However, the ending is absolute rubbish. Total tosh. I warned you (saw the film a few weeks back on VCD) - walk out a good half an hour before the end or you'll hate the film. I'm not going to give it away for those who haven't seen it - but just make sure you have somewhere convienent to be sick. Oh, and for those who have seen it - they're not aliens. Think about it. Doesn't suddenly make up for the rubbish ending or anything, but at least it's something.

Anyway, watch it for Osment, the last glimmer of Kubrick we'll see on screen and... well thats about it.
