I'm fairly new to the whole Gran Turismo thing and had never played a GT game before randomly buying GT3 off some dodgy geezer for £25.
Anyway, I'd always heard that these Gran Turismo games were a cut above the rest and then when GT3 came out I thought jump on the band wagon (and at £25 instead of £40, who could say no?). I was REALLY impressed to say the least, I became just as addicted as anyone and thought to myself (gosh, Gran Turismo games ARE amazing afterall! Why did I wait until now???)
However, I went down the pub last night (didn't touch a drop in case you were wondering, ssxpro!) and in my pub they have a playstation for your gaming pleasure. I sat down with a buddy of mine, picked up a pad and waited for the game to come on. Its a bit random at the pub, I was expecting Tony Hawks but today it was GT2!
Great! I thought to myself, there I was complaining about being torn away from GT3 at home, but it doesn't matter now because I can play something 'just as good' here.
Let me just pause here and say to all those anti PS2 folk, all you ninty's, all you Sony haters and anyone who said "GT3 is just a slightly souped up GT2", where oh where did you get that warped information from?
To think, at one time I had faith in you people! I thought "fair enough, bit better graphics I can see their complaint" It is all of you who set me up for this mighty fall.
The game came on we started a race and my jaw hit the floor. As far as I'm concerned the two experiences could not be further apart.
Its like sitting and watching "independance day" on an 8" black and white TV with bad reception and saying "Its practically the same as watching it at the cinema"
The only way you could get the two games to seem similar would be if you set up GT2 on the sweetest of the sweet flat screen digital TV and played it through an expensive SCART set up, then gave someone an old ,crappy computer with 28k modem and a really poor resolution moniter and then streamed GT3 to them over the internet.
Then and only then could I accept someone saying "They're practically the same game, that one just looks a little nicer!"
I know that this seems a bit harsh and I'm sure GT2 was good in its day, but this experience really helped me see what all the hype was about and really gave me a window into what developers can achieve on the PS2.
I'll apologise to Dringo in advance, but REALLY from what I've already seen..
Here's to the future!!!
