Every time someone gets a new CD, they review it here. It doesn't have to be long - although it can be. I guess it doesn't need to be a new CD either, old ones would be just as good.
So, anyone up for it?
This is a highly ammusing album from ex TOP lead vocalist Lenny Williams.
Tracks one to ten are very amusingly written and performed with over the top sincerity. All intentional, they'll make you chuckle even on repeated listenings.
Track eleven is one of the greatest love songs I've ever heard. Its called "Because I still love you" and I believe is mentioned in the film "Kings of comedy" or whatever its called.
Its only beaten by "Just when we start makin' it". A song that Lenny Williams did with TOP. I think they've tried to implement some of this feeling into "Because I still love you". But I can't imagine that a single one of you would care either way!
Except maybe TIM-MAY's older brother?
Anyway its the first album they ever made and its dead good, favourite tracks are 409 in your coffee maker, At the Library and 16. Its well good I reckon you should all own a copy.
after that in depth review im just gonna collapse into my chair and watch the room spin.
Following on from the success (and immense over playing) of Heaven Is A Bagpipe, OPM released their album, titled Menace To Sobriety. It’s a fairly diverse album, and with my amazing lack of musical knowledge I can’t put my finger on what genre it falls in. So I guess I’ll just go through the tracks one by one, and draw my conclusions at the end.
Track One: Stash Up – Rap, from what I can tell. Fast paced, and thus a good opener. No real theme to the lyrics as far as I can tell – The track seems to be a chorus and a bridge (I have no idea if this is the right word or not, but I mean a bit that is repeated in the song that isn’t a chorus. I think) linked with some completely random rapping. Quite like this one.
Track Two: Interlude – Ummm…. This is just a tune that lasts for about 10 seconds. I think I’m probably missing the point completely.
Track 3: Heaven Is A Halfpipe/Bagpipe – You’ll have heard it, unless you have been working down a mine for the last 3 months. Or had your head stuck under a rock. Or live in Wales, where I am told they don’t have radios. It does get annoying after a while, but its nice to have something familiar. Well, at least for the first few times you play the album, then its just boring. And again, the lyrics make no sense – “Got my education in stale fishology”?
Track 4: El Capitan: Fairly good. The lyrics actually make some sense this time – its all about a drink called ‘El Capitan’. Sounds pretty relaxed, and the raps are pretty good.
Track 5: Undercover Freak – A very dark track. See what I mean about diverse – from happy poppy Heaven Is A Halfpipe, to something lusty and scary like this. Fairly slow, and again the lyrics have some form. Really grows on you.
Track 6: Brighter Side – The best track on the album, bar none. Slightly poppy, but that isn’t necessarily a bad thing. Quite emotional, it really seems like it was written from the heart, and I think that’s why I like it so much. I reckon this could be a single though, as there is a distinct lack of swearing. And that means we will probably hear this too many times, and the track will be wrecked. I spose I should go to Wales then…
Track 7: Better Daze – A token ‘The world sucks’ song that is on a lot of albums nowadays. Money is the culprit according to this. Surprisingly angry track, and it borders on metal for a bit. Really good, in my opinion – these two middle tracks are the high point of the album.
Track 8: Trucha – For some reason, OPM decide to have a song with the chorus in a different language – I’m guessing Spanish, but I’m probably wrong. There is a very Spanish feel to the whole track, which isn’t good. Not one of my favourites, just a filler track really.
Track 9: Dealerman – Quirky, reminds me of old films. The music sounds a bit like getaway music, for some odd reason. As far as I can tell, the song is about some outcast who “gets much love from his dealerman”. Naturally, I just picked the worst quote possible. Anyway, one of the better tracks on the album, and I cant think of a reason why.
Track 10: Reality Check – Sounds like what would happen if Dre got depressed. Similer to Better Daze, and has what sounds like a Church Organ in the background. Lyrics about the streets of California, which I cant really relate to. But anyway, nice and depressing. Good track.
Track 11: Interlude – Rage Against The Coke Machine – One of those times where they thought of the title before the content. Boring. I still haven’t worked out why anyone has interludes anyway.
Track 12: Unda – Has that sort of ‘too happy’ beat. Sounds like the whole track is sarcastic. Can’t really think of much else to say on this – its nothing special, compared to what’s on the rest of the album.
Track 13: 15 Minutes - Not an interlude, but only lasts 45 seconds. Just heavy guitar in the background, and some dude shouting. Strange.
Track 14: Fish Out Of Water – Another superb track. Really sounds like it should be the last on the album, but it isn’t. Slower, and again good.
Track 15: Sound System – Ends the alb on a high note. Happy, and by now I’ve ran out of stuff to say without repeating myself. So I end here.
Overall, a very, very good album, with only a couple of average tracks. Brighter Side is one of my faveorite songs ever, so I really hope they don’t release it as a single. I would recommend this to anyone who doesn’t mind things getting a bit poppy at times, and I would also like to tell people that most of it has nothing to do with Skating, aside from that Halfpipe song. This album has been played a lot at my house, and even some bloke I know thought it was good. And if that isn’t a qualified opinion, what is?
Hope you had more fun reading this than I did writing it.
