Michael "TYP" says: I'm not so sure this is that important. CODE: Veronica wouldn't have that much updating anyway.
David says: This could be taken in many different ways. The original Resident Evil had very poor prerendered backgrounds. In fact, the cinema cut scenes were filmed with actual actors. Capcom didn't really raise the graphical bar on the series until the second game. That's when they made richly detailed 3D backgrounds and CG FMV for the cut-scenes.
Hopefully, they'll at least re-render the backgrounds in 640x480 resolution, and add the shadow mapping and light sourcing that is going to be in Resident Evil 1. The actual geometry of the backgrounds is great already in those games, so perhaps that's what they meant.
Code Veronica is another matter entirely. I imagine that one will look basically like the Dreamcast and Playstation 2 versions. At least we have a time frame for Resident Evil 4 now.
Max says: In the original announcement, Mikami mentioned that the series had strayed away from its horror roots and become less scary. Allegedly with the remakes (or at least with the RE1 rebirth) Mikami & company would be trying to make the game scarier. The “new” RE1 also seems to include some new aspects of gameplay, such as stabbing zombies in the head. I wonder if such new features will be incorporated in the newer versions. I’m also wondering if the stories will tie together anymore in the remakes…
I’d expect that these ports to sport some graphic improvements just by virtue of running on the GameCube. Like David, I’m hoping the light and shadow effects for RE1 are utilized, as they definitely make things much creepier. Maybe the lighting effects
No matter how the series appears, I am very delighted by the prospect of the entire series being collected on one system (I can already imagine a RE boxed set). The fact it’s happening on the Nintendo GameCube is like having my cake and eating it too.
So new graphical improvements just not as much effort as the first, makes sense to me.
Also, we willl get the Resi series, just later on.
