As I sit here at home feeling distinctly under the weather from flu and generally feeling bad I notice my Dad’s old Bruce Springsteen CD by the music system. For some strange reason I decided to slam it in and play it. It was good. I was surprised. It was just easy to listen to with a classic beat and some good old skool rock. It got me thinking, where is this universally appealing music today?

I can’t find it at all. Back then, about the time I was born,’84, it was easy, it was better. No real differences in opinion to the state it is in today. The music industry and everything around it today is false, tacky and generally a pile of old shoes. There are so many different types of music which is a good thing, but everything is so defined, so important among some people’s life. It’s Ok to have an opinion on music but if it encroaches on general aspects of your life then this is bad.

For instance, Rock has turned from a universally enjoyable genre to a hard metal thrash of screaming voices, swearing, cussing, death threats and suicidal songs. Rock nowadays is so different. To like this rock music of today you must conform, and to conform you must wear black clothes, dye your hair and generally look like a right fool. Of course there are exceptions to this but I am talking about music on the whole.

Another thing is that people know have violent views on music, which make conversations about it more heated. If someone likes Hip-Hop and thinks trance is rubbish, fair enough, but it’s when they think that they are right and everyone must be the same that really gets on my nerves. Everyone is entitled to their views and if I like some music then I will say and not give a monkeys about what anyone else says. I will never dress like the music tells me too, the music industry is a sham and yet most people are blind.

They worship their music heroes as if they are gods when half of the people couldn’t write a good song ever. Another thing that annoys me is most radio stations and TOTP shows. These are stupid. To get to Number 1 in the charts now takes a puny sales figure of around the 100,000 mark. When Oasis and Blur were battling for supremacy, a number one hit required millions of sales.

So in conclusion, poke it. Poke the Charts, poke the fads, poke the music encroaching and defining your life. Like what you like, do what you want, listen to whatever you like and don’t care what others say. People can make choices, so choose, don’t let other people, be they mates or PR specialists or Radio DJs choose for you.

Oh, and being ill is not nice. Stupid flu.

Agree 100% with you there mate.

What really surprises me though, is people that can only like one sort of music.

Excuse me?

I find that just *so* boring. How can you only like one type of music? Where's the variety? What if you're in a different mood?

I like most sorts of music, with exceptions of general pop, country, and classical, and I can't ever see myself liking just one genre.

What if I'm in a bad mood? Slam on some good old Guns n Roses. What if I want to relax a bit? Put on a bit of trance. What if I want something to sing a long with? Put on some indie. What if I?

See what I mean?
