Nintendo didn't exactly splash out on the N64 in the UK did they, we didn't get quite a lot of games that ended up American or Japanese only, we didn't get the 64-DD, we didn't get half the add-ons and extras that were released in the other countries and even had to wait for games such as Excitebike 64 and 1080 Snowboarding to even arrive even months after they were released elsewhere. Sony however were always ahead and spent a hell of a lot of money on advertising for their games and appliances, such as commercials poster campaigns etc. The Playstation then was the victim of mass piracy, Playstations were being 'chipped' and games copied which means that the games were having a lot of money spent on them with advertising but were not being sold like they should have been due to them being copied then sold over and over to thousands of Playstation owners across the UK.
The N64 was not a victim of this piracy so every game it sold it got the full price so in that respect Nintendo were making a decent profit whereas Sony wasn’t selling as well. So you could say that Sony were loosing out on money with sales of games and Nintendo were doing well so when you think about it pound for pound Nintendo probably did the best out of the two consoles in total profits made for a single game. Nintendo games were generally quite expensive in comparison to Sony and Sega ones so Nintendo were always going to come out on top ion that respect, and people have the audacity to say the N64 waste of time! Indeed.
The Playstation would easily however be the most profitable for games sold in general due to the Playstations popularity millions of games were sold across the world so if there were a graph putting Sony’s games sold against Nintendo’s and Sega’s, Sony would come out the winning company.
The Sega Saturn’s life was very much the same as the Dreamcast, short lived, after loosing the ability to cater for the need for new games the Sega Saturn was crushed under the likes of Nintendo and Sega, so they went to on to begin creating there new 128 bit console after the Saturn not sufficing the publics needs.
The Playstation clearly won the ‘console wars’ with it’s immense popularity and backing of developers making games for it, the Playstation also used cd’s for there consoles which meant developers could easily produce large games and it was a lot cheaper whereas Nintendo were left back with the old cartridges and although what is better is debatable as each format has it’s own advantages CD’s are obviously better and have more capabilities and this is proven by the fact that the new next generation consoles are all disc based.
Both Sony’s and Sega’s machines were released in the UK a long time before the N64 so had an advantage but Nintendo countered this with pricing their console at 250 forcing Sony and Sega to lower their consoles price to compete, this however came off better for the Playstation as the three consoles were fighting for the publics attention with special offers and deals and ultimately Sony won due to their experience in advertising and were able to target their audience with good results.
At first Nintendo tried to sell their console on specifications having poster campaign saying “The most powerful games console in the world!” but this did not have the desired results and went on to sell their console by producing good/revolutionary games which they did. The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of time sold millions of N64 consoles across the world as people were buying the console just to play the game!
It soon came down to just Sony and Nintendo and by then Sony was already the clear winner and despite Nintendo’s efforts the Sony Playstation reigns and still does supreme. A problem that Nintendo could be said to have had was their secrecy around what they were doing an example would be Diddy Kong Racing this game crept up from out of nowhere and shocked everyone with it’s immediate release whereas Sony like to gain the publics attention with giving the public little insights to what there doing making the games players more interested in Sony.
This time round though things are much different the companies know what they were missing the last time round, expect advertising everywhere you go Nintendo are surely going to be trying to dominate the European market this year round and with the Gamecube's popularity already quite high before the console is even released in the UK and with lots of hype soon to come expect Nintendo to do very well in these 'console wars'. A Nintendo employee has even said
“We began by examining all the problems we’ve had working on the N64 since it’s release”
and also listed changes they were making to the Gamecube, good news for Nintendo fans and indeed games players in general.
Sony with the PS2 are doing quite well but with a drip dry flow of good games at the start of the consoles release they need something to pull it up and with the release of the Gamecube expected to have a healthy amount of quality games due to be released close to the consoles launch expect Nintendo to do extremely well with the Gamecube and maybe steal the top spot from Sony.
Going by this years game shows though Nintendo seem to be pulling in a lot more attention and the public are expecting sequels to games from all developers such as Final Fantasy, Zelda, Mario, Sonic, Tomb Raider plus many more, things are already quite heated.
With Sony’s popularity still high from their last machine expect most fans to stay loyal to the Playstations and with some really top games soon to be released on the PS2 and with great ones out already Sony have a good start, expect these ‘console wars’ to be very interesting indeed.
Also the Gamecube is unlikely to fall to piracy like the Playstation did, granted the Gamecube probably could be 'chipped' but the cost of the discs to put the games on will be expected to be high so there is no real point in doing this. The PS2 however will most likely be pirated and loose out once again to making decent money from there games and Nintendo will reign supreme from profits made.
As for the Sega and the Dreamcast well that unfortunately has already lost out to the bigger competitors which is a shame because the it had great potential just not enough public interest compared to the other consoles. Sega are bringing there efforts to the new machines and developing games for them which can only mean good things for Gamecube, X-Box and PS2. The X-Box doesn’t seem to have that much popularity at the moment and with the launch date of the Gamecube set to be soon, Bill Gates machine doesn’t look like it's going to get the publics attention like Sony and Nintendo do expect mass advertising for this console.
What each console can do with the Internet is going to be a huge factor in which console is going to be the most popular, we know there will be online gaming with fight but maybe downloads of demos or new features? Maybe a new peripheral to allow this?
Specifications don’t make the console but play a big part and the X-Box seems to have the better specifications and the moment but what do you expect from Microsoft. The Gamecube has a 485MHZ clock but with a large cache it will run a lot faster.
Overall the battle is going to be fierce and expect a much dominated market by Sony with the PS2 but Nintendo are going to be trying to get back that No1 spot this time around and the X-Box may be the newcomer but as Sony proved with the PS1 newcomers can be highly successful. We wont know the clear dominant company though until the consoles have been on the market for a while yet though, if you ask me it’s all down to the games and what the system can do with the internet as this is pretty much the future of gaming.
What do you think?
How do you think the internet will be used?
What will be the deciding factor for console supremecy?

This could be a factor, but Nintendo have control of the

Well the discs that Nintendo are putting their games on now are a lot cheaper to produce and so on, so lets hope we have seen the end of over priced Nintendo games :D
> I hope that there isn't a clear cut winner.
If one company controls the

£35 for a Nes conversion - OUCH!

To answer the question 'What will be the deciding factor in console supremacy?'. The answer is obvious. The games will be the deciding factor.
The specs just show what the console is cabable of. Not really the deciding factor.
The looks don't really play a part, unless you buy a console solely on what it looks like.
It all boils down to the games. If a console doesn't have any good games, then nobody will bother buying iy. If there are quality games available, then people will buy it. I suppose the price may be a factor as well, but the main factor is the games.
