I checked the disk and it didn't look to me in great shape - no scratches, but not a nice even 'finish' to the disk.
So I put it down to the disk being lame.
A couple of days ago I was watching another dvd and had the same problem, only this time the disk was in absolutely perfect condition.
I heard there's a way to sort of fine-tune the ps2 to minimise these problems, but I forget the detail.
So, is there?
Or should I just send it back to Sony?
Thanks

Step 1 - Upgrade to the new DVD player (2.0 I think is the latest, the one with the disc and extra functions).
Step 2 - Buy a lense cleaner. I was worried at first, but tried it, and it works. Its basically a CD with a little brush on it. You put it in, and bingo. First time I did it, the thing skipped constantly, and took about 15 minutes to finish. Now I just put the disc in, follow the instructions, takes about 30 seconds, and its done. The discs now work fine.
Obviously this won't work for everyone, as sometimes it really is a problem with the PS2 itself, but I've found that its usually dust causing the difficulties.
mine gradually got worse and worse, until it wouldn't play any DVDs at all. then the games stopped working properly (such as terrible graphical glitches due to loading problems and crashing).
it seems sony see fit to make their little console last only a couple of years at most.
spend time with your little black box, cherish every minute, for soon it will be headed off to the console maker in the sky.
of course I could be wrong, but it sounds exactly the same problem.
