Westwood went down the route of using their in house developers to do a FPS, which was the first time they had attempted a title of that genre.
Lucuasarts went the route of using a third patry (Raven) for the Jedi Knight games.
Which has been more successful?
The game sucks.

Actually, Lucasarts made the first 2 Dark Forces games (which eventually became the Jedi Knight series) and while the first one was good, but not great, the sequel was an amazing game and one I liked better than Jedi Outcast.
The trouble with Renegade though, is westwood tried to cross two genres to appeal to both FPS and C&C fans, but failed to really make a go at either one of these two different genre's. It was also plagued by technical issues which was strange considering the not that impressive graphics.
Multiplayer was supposed to be a blast, and it has become something of a cult hit with some gamers, but I wouldn't pass up a game of Battlefield 1942 or Battlezone for this outdated effort. It's no wonder Renegade 2 was canned.
i have the game, though......
