You know what I'm talking about though, right?
Even back in the days of the NES and Sega Master System many of the platformers had themed levels. And that trend has continued in todays games.
Trouble is, it's mostly the same old themes in all of the darned games.
You always get an initial level, in a world of rolling hills, green grass, and various buildings/structures. Usually more of a training level than anything else.
Sometimes you'll get a 'space' level. Though is more of an old school platformer trend, in which they made you jump really high, and slowly, as if to emphasis less gravity.
There's usually a western level too. Not usually cowboys and stuff, buy deserts and cacti are popular.
You get an ice level, and you slip around a bit.
A water level, with an awkward control method of swimming, and this level usually sucks.
To counter this there will no doubt be a 'fire' or lava level too.
So why is it we get the same old ideas? Even if the levels are completely different, incorporating different aspects of each 'theme' it still lacks imagination.
But originality is hard to come by, and I guess increasingly so - as time goes by, there must be less and less new stuff you can do, right? Hmmm, maybe?
So what can we expect next in 3D adventure style games? More games that take us to a desert land, a fire land, and ice land, a water land and the like?
Maybe. But maybe they'll come up with original levels too.
Like that clock level on Super Mario 64, but I can visualise it. Maybe that's why I'm not developing games/
So, favourite levels, worst levels?
The mucis is great, the theme although continually The 4 Seasons, sees all four parts through, which I think is cool. The landscape changes, the mucis changes, it's great!
My favourite level is the "Shock It To Me Theatre: Killer Department Store" in ILLBLEED on the DC - but I think I'm the only person in the UK who has played this game.
The worst levels I can think of are Shifting sand land and Tick Tock clock on Mario 64 they where so annoying. Oh and Bubblegloop Swamp on Banjo Kazooie.
Anyway, favourite level?? It has to be emmm, let me think, I really don't know. Possibly the Complex on Goldeneye, an all time classic Multiplayer map.
