If a motherboard supports AGP 4x, will a AGP 8x graphics card work with it (ie slightly slower?) or do you need a 8x motherboard?

I'm a geek, but not that much of a geek to know or really care how to properly word 4X AGP or whatever it is.

this means that it will bottleneck and not perform how it was designed - at 8x AGP bus
I think it would work, but operate at 4x.
