I really need to get this off my chest. Last night i was playing san andreas and i thought that i would attempt to collect all the horse shoes in las venturas, you know, for completetion sake.

Nearly an hour later i was p****d off, annoyed and bored. Collecting items to unlock things is wrong. Its not fun, it becomes work. Very, very tedious work. Why do programmers do it? is it a pedantic and a**l attempt to get more life span in a game?

It then got me thinking what about the other methods of unlocking things? Are there any ways to make things rewarding and less of a mundane task? Lets look at a few:

Unlock through time trials (complete entire game under certain time limit)- Thats annoying. I like to play games in my own pace and enjoy them. Rushing through things whilst not as tedious as collecting items certainly isn't a way to enjoy the game.

Complete game on certain difficulty- Whilst i attempt to play the game on the hardest difficulty ever, what if you're a causal player and wasn't that good at games? Isn't that a bit of a punishment to deny gamers certain extras if they're not good enough?

The only one i could come up with that was remotely interesting was either completeing missions and challenges whereby they get unlocked.

Ok fair enough, that might become more tedious, but less so then wandering blindly through the game, feverly searching every nook or cranny to unlock something. At least it gives us reason to attempt to get
the unlocks, not for the unlocks themselves but the journey itself.

Oh, thats right i could cheat. Yeah i could do that, but then in a sense thats just another way of saying, you were defeated by binary coding and something that isn't as smart as you. It just goes against me sometimes. It seems like the final insult or humiliation.

Please developers make more of an effort to come up with interesting ways to unlock things!

So your thoughts on collecting items to unlock things. Where do you stand on this? What methods do you think work for unlocking items?

just like in fable. Which incidently was a waste of time. For a lousy frying pan. Even with it as an uber weapon it was a waste of time.

collecting items to unlock stuff really doesn't interest me unless they really are very big ones (unlock classic games etc). As its a second run through the game which isn't as good as the first time you go through it. I prefered if the developers found other ways to extend the game other then attempting to play the main game again. I was thinking in mind of TS, as that was pretty entertaining stuff and the unlockables came thick and fast. Plus they were quick and pretty accessible unlike some collectible challenges...

I don't mind collecting stuff in games if there isn't a vast area to search for a small amount of items.

I was thinking about collecting items in a game. You should collect items but attached to them is a riddle with the location of the next item. Like a big treasure hunt through the game.

I suppose it also depends on the rewards as well. I suppose in a linear game, collecting stuff to unlock other stuff might work. Provided they're not too obsecure and were easily found with just exploring the surroundings slightly and not behind some hidden wall, it should work.

Collecting stuff to unlock things is fine if you do it right. Games where you have to play again to collect stuff is the way to go, but with games such as San Andreas you're in a free roaming environment, so end up hunting around for ages.

What they could do is have something unlocked for each box you pick up. So you'd pick up a box and get a helicoptor cheat, or pick up a box and get a special suit etc. These would be in set places, so if you did want only certain things you could check out an FAQ or games magazine and work out where the ones you wanted were.

At least some of these should be placed where you'll find them without looking, so they act as nice surprises as you're playing the game properly...
