The ultimate Gamecube preview guide.

The GameCube will be released at the latest by late March possibly with 3 first-party and several third party titles.
---------------------------------
Reasons to get a GameCube:
Most of the reasons are obvious. The software (games that show that effort has really gone into them like Monkey Ball and Eternal Darkness, this shows that Nintendo are trying to create a new gaming experience to gamers.

After an overwhelmingly good showing at E3 it came away with the majority of the awards:
----------------------------
Best of Show -- Nintendo GameCube; Runner-up -- Star Wars Galaxies (PC)
Best Console Hardware -- Nintendo GameCube; Runner-up -- Microsoft Xbox
Best Action Game -- Star Wars Rogue Leader: Rogue Squadron II; Runner-up -- Medal of Honor Allied Assualt (PC)
Best Fighting Game -- Super Smash Bros. Melee; Runner-up -- Capcom vs. SNK 2: Mark of the Millennium.
-----------------------------
The following are developer quotes that were gathered from IGN, the IGN boards, PlanetGamecube.com and Tendobox.com. First are the third party quotes and lastly are the second/first party quotes. Note most of these were post E3 impressions but I’m sure they haven’t changed much.

-Electronic Arts
"Coming out of E3, yes, we were more excited about Gamecube and we’re working diligently to try to get more products ready for that platform to release this fiscal year," said the company's president Larry Probst to analysts. "What we’ve announced is that we have 10 products in development on both of those platforms, and we haven’t changed that. As we get a sense of how those are doing we’ll adjust how many on each, but we’ve committed to doing 10 on each."

"The Nintendo GameCube can push more polygons around with higher-resolution textures than PS2,"

Nintendo Power: Rob, from a developer's angle, what specifically would you say are the more positive aspects of making a game for Nintendo GameCube?
RM: At the top level, I think Nintendo achieved their goal of making a machine that's easy to program for. The time to port even a game from a different platform like the PS2 is exceedingly fast and easy. Documentation is really good, and support from Nintendo is really good. It's been very easy to get Madden up and running very quickly.
In more detail, the fact that the system will take any type of data makes it easy to program for. The fact that it has predictable performance is good. That's very important. One of the key things about Nintendo GameCube is that the memory vendor they chose was MoSys. What that gives you is low latency memory. Very predictable latency bandwidth.
So when you're programming you can say to yourself, "Okay, I added a certain number of players, and it's going to cost me this much and I can count on that."
NP: So you're never hit with any big surprises.
RM: That's right. There's not a clip anywhere in the performance. It's very predictable, which is good. It gives you an idea about how far you can go with your game. The dev systems are nice. You actually have two different models available from two different vendors, which is nice. So there's competition.

-Sega
"Four words: don't write off Nintendo. A lot of companies have, but Nintendo's got a five billion dollar war chest and a lot of great, original franchises."

-Yuji Naka
Famitsu: What are your impressions of GameCube?
Yuji Naka [Sonic Team]: Really easy to program. PSO was completed in about a month. This proves how easy it is to work with
Famitsu: Wow!
IGNcube: What would you say your favorite part of developing for GameCube is?
Naka-san: I think its stability as a system. It's very stable. Anything that's theoretically possible, we can execute it and it works
"if you're a fan of Sonic Team, I recommend that you buy a GameCube."

-Amusment Vision
IGNcube: What are your favorite strengths of the GameCube hardware?
Nagoshi-san: Firstly, it has good balance as a whole. Next, the CPU because it's fast. [Then] the texture memory, polygon power

-Famitsu: Are you going to be developing primarily on GameCube from now on?
Toshiro Nagoshi [Amusement Vision]: Yes, I am. I think it's natural to think of GameCube as our main platform, having worked with it, it gives us an advantage. We've been thinking of many things other than these

-Famitsu: Having worked on the GameCube hardware for the past few months, what are your impressions of it?
Nagoshi: I hoped that the hardware would reflect the same technological leap as from the Super Famicom to the Nintendo 64. Based on our early development, the GameCube passes that test with flying colors.

-Famitsu: So will you focus on original titles for GameCube after Monkey Ball and Virtua Striker 3?
Nagoshi: Yes, our development is taking a step in that direction. Thinking about the future, it wouldn't do us any good to continue focusing on the same areas. When you think about games that really stand out lately, they're network titles. For that reason, I'm interested in working on a new online console title. Ideally, we'd like to announce our full plans at E3 next year.
"Our entire staff fell in love with the GameCube when we first received development kits, and I think players will too. Even if Nintendo is perceived as catering to a younger audience, GameCube will win over players of all ages" - Toshihiro Nagoshi
IGNcube: Will we see Planet Harriers on GameCube?
Nagoshi-san: Keep on hoping [JS: cross your fingers everybody :) ] Amusment Vision loves them some GCN huh.

-Namco
"We are very interested in Nintendo's GameCube as one of our target machines because it will have a strong influence in changing the current user groups"

-Konami
"Everyone has been impressed with Nintendo. It has been perhaps their greatest ever show. Previously Nintendo has made announcements and then disappointed, but at E3 people saw the Cube, saw playable demos and were immediately convinced"

-Kojima"Some websites have articles saying that I have said that 'Nintendo GameCube is for kids and immature people,'" commented Kojima. "I have never made a reply of that nuance. Many times when I do an interview for a magazine, what I mean is not always re-created in the article with my intentions, but instead are misinterpreted. I personally have high hopes for the GameCube. I would like to develop a game for GameCube."

-Squaresoft
"That certainly is a possibility. In fact, executives at Square are very enthusiastic about Nintendo."

-Raven Software:
What impressed you the most at E3?
Nintendo's showing for the GameCube. Squadron Leader from Lucas Arts is simply the best looking flight game I have ever seen. It just sold a GameCube right here
-- Xbox. Playstation 2. GameCube. Which console stole the show? --
GameCube. No question. PSX2 had some decent stuff too, the XBox was a little disappointing I thought

-Volition
-- What impressed you the most at E3? --
GameCube. The games that were being shown were impressive and polished. It looked almost like they were ready to go to market now instead of later this year. Rogue Leader was probably the coolest looking game I saw at the show

-Z-Axis:
-- Xbox. Playstation 2. GameCube. Which console stole the show? --
Gamecube all the way. Talk about an impressive, SOLID showing. The more I see of it, the more impressed I am. We just got our game up and running on the dev station for it, and it was as easy if not easier to do than the xbox, and MUCH easier by far than the ps2

-ID software
"The $199 price tag for the GameCube, coupled with the power of Nintendo's brands makes me believe they'll end up the favorite in the long run"

-Gearbox Software
-- What impressed you the most at E3? --
The Game Cube is great. A lot of us are considering doing a Game Cube title because of all the right decisions Nintendo has made...

-Epic Games: Unreal
-- What impressed you the most at E3? --
Two things ... Medal of Honor and GameCube.
-- Xbox. Playstation 2. GameCube. Which console stole the show? --
GameCube all the way. Some of the PS2 stuff looked cool (Final Fantasy X and Dark Alliance especially), but the GameCube games are solid, polished and run smoothly. I didn't look at a single GameCube game without wanting to play it

-Silicon Knights
"Those people who were dominating through technology because they could always maintain 60 frames per second or they could do more polygons than someone else, those people are going to start to fade into the background and the people who are really going to come to the forefront are the people who can create the best stories and create the best gameplay ideas. I think that's very important."
"The people who have made the hardware, they are awesome! They really know what they are doing. It is by the far the best hardware out there."
"I think the GAMECUBE in general is really going to change the industry ,,, What I think is going to happen, especially with third parties, is that they're going to find that bringing the graphics and the technology up to speed very quickly is going to be easy. So the change that's going to occur is that is that content and the ability to create content are truly going to come to the forefront for the first time.
"Previous to being second party, we were very strong in content, artwork, some technologies. Now that we're in the fold with Nintendo, our ability to create gameplay has gone through the roof."

**Factor 5
NintendoWeb: What about LucasArts’ stance on not porting games from one console to another? Will that hold true for Rogue Squadron II?
Brett Tosti: [pause] It’s… well right now, everything is certainly an exclusive. We are doing so many things that are specific to GameCube. There are certain things in the whole interface in the way the button configurations work with the game that we can only do with GameCube. So, yeah, right now, it’s exclusive for GameCube.
NW: What are your thoughts on Nintendo’s proprietary mini-DVD format?
BT: We don’t actually have them right now. I think they are great. The storage capacity is more than we need for Rogue Leader. They are 1.5 Gigs, and that’s tons! Yeah, we’re not having any problems with space. Right now what we are using is a G-Box, which emulates the sync times for those little mini-discs. From what I saw at Nintendo’s [pre-E3] presentation, Miyamoto loaded up Luigi’s Mansion in a snap. There are some definite things you can do to optimize the load times.

-NCL
"Claude (Wave Race:Blue Storm): No, no - what you see is what you get. It's all in real-time. Nintendo put in our hands a gem. The GameCube is like a diamond - it's so pure, streamlined, vicious and fantastic. It's a dream for an engineer. It's unbelievable."

**********Industry, Experts, and Interesting News***********
-Okada (Atlus)
Although Atlus did not have any software displayed at Spaceworld 2001, Atlus R&D director Mr. Okada attended the show to see some of the software other developers were working on. Okada confirms the system is very easy to develop for, and he is currently working on a secret project which can not be announced at this time. The title is hinted to be an RPG, but he could not divulge further details

-Tatsuya (Capcom)
"One of the Capcom directors was also spotted during the exhibition. Mr. Tatsuya commented how easy and powerful the system was. When asked about Resident Evil Zero, Tatsuya said the game is being worked on for the GameCube, but Capcom was not confirming a release date or further details at this point in time. Tatsuya did add, by saying the game looked incredible, and it will be worth the wait."

-Yoichiro (EA Square)
EA Square executive Mr. Yoichiro had nothing new to mention of Electronic Arts of Japan's GameCube support. Mr. Yoichiro did state he was very impressed with the Spaceworld 2001 line up, and again confirmed many of the developers were very enthusiastic over working on the system.

-Taniguchi (From Software)
From Software R&D producer, and the man heading up the GameCube RPG RUNE, mentions he would like to develop titles for some of the older GameCube consumers. Taniguchi feels the system is great...

-Take Two Still Gamecube Exclusive
"Today in a conference call Take-Two reiterated that it is developing products for GameCube. The company has previously stated that it will bring Duke Nukem Forever to Nintendo's next-generation console sometime next year. The company has made no specific announcements about any of its other GameCube products"

-AM2 Development
"In Sega's most recent UK version of its Official Dreamcast Magazine, AM2 was listed among the 2 other known Sega GCN developers. Tendo Box also quotes the magazine as stating all 3 have been at work since last Fall!"

Hardware initiative: The controller is one of, if not the most ergonomically impressive to date. No other controller has received such praise for its ease of use. Nintendo worked extremely hard to make the perfect controller and although it may not be comfortable for people with ape size hands, it does however fit the hands of most people. The button layout looks complicated at first but it is apparently easy to use, and from peoples impressions you only have to look at it once to figure out how to use it.

Digi-card and SD memory cards. The digi-card is can only hold 59 blocks of memory which for Dreamcast owners it is just ¼ the size of a VMU. The SD card however makes up for this, you can buy any size of card from 16 MB to 64/128 MB, meaning that you’ll never have to use another memory card. SD cards also have the advantage over Hard drives i.e the ones from the xbox and the PS2. With the xbox most of the space will be taken up by games loaded onto them to minimise loading times but the Gamecube does not need that. You can transport your SD card anywhere and it will be able to connect with your PC if any game uses that. The possibility that it can connect to your PC means that if the GameCube is not online you can still get upgrades for any particular game like PSO ver.2 that way.

The games. Without a doubt THE selling point of the Gamecube is the games. Here’s a list of the Games to be released, note most are missing, see end).

Kudos to Jean from the IGN boards for letting me use some of his information. And note this isn’t an attempt at GAD because most of the information is from other sites.

Well one reason has to be that they can't release it all over the globe at the same time cos there'd just wouldn't be enough Gamecubes to go around. By releaseing it a few months later in Europe means that there will be enough on release and so we'll all go home happy after visiting the shops, or wake up happy after SR delivers it!

The only reason I want a gamecube is to play the new resident evil games, apart from that it offers very little to satisfy my taste.
