But more on that in a bit. First off, a game that has been gathering my 'Full on' attention for a good bit now deserves a mention. A game that is based on a Saga of films that spawned fan's from every civilisation on Earth. Rogue Leader:Rogue Squadron 2 shouldn't be ignored.
When LucasArts unveiled the first screens and video of their "Star Wars title", a big question was asked . Could this be the era in which video games look just as good, if not better, than the graphics used in movies? This question was answered rather quickly, as Nintendo unveiled the incredibly beautiful, Rogue Squadron 2 to us, the potential buyers.
Once again, the Gamecube controller works beautifully with the game mechanics. In this version of Rogue Squadron, the D-pad actually serves quite an important purpose. Throughout the games, when performing missions, the other two aircraft of your squadron are supposed to stay to the right and left of you at all times. This would add a lot to the gameplay because the computer becomes more involved with the completion of missions and the destruction of enemies. However, if the player ventures into a region with too much enemy gunfire, and your squad inflicts too much damage, the other two members of your squad will break the formation, and then you're on your own. This is when the D-pad comes in. With the D-pad, you can tell your squad to get back into formation, continue to scramble, or retreat from the mission. What innovation!!
Once the shield is activated, the screen turns red, and targets are in a bright white, with heat emanating from the target. It's an incredibly impressive graphical effect. From there, you may fire the missiles at your targets. As with the other GC games, the built-in rumble feature of the controller reacts with the gameplay. When missiles are fired, the controller jolts suddenly, and the controller will rumble if laser fire is getting close to your aircraft.
In the playable Death Star level at E3, the game was easily cruising along at 60fps with multiple enemies and gunfire on the screen all at the same time. Furthermore, a lot of the Gamecube's effects were turned on, even with the 60fps. Another level that was playable was the battle of Hoth. The detail on the buildings through which to manouver, was astonishing. Furthermore, there was little to no pop-up on the levels that were shown. The models of the ships easily rivaled those that are on the star wars movies. Actually, it is rumored that George Lucas told LucasArts to tone down the graphics a little bit, so that it doesn't rival the graphics of the movies. Whether that is true or not remains to be seen, although I don't believe it, however it is pure fact that next to the upcoming Resident Evil series to GC, this is one of the greatest looking videogames ever made.
The soundtrack features some of John William's best Star Wars hits and classics, with added boost from developer's Factor 5. This all of course adds to the general realism and feel of the films.
It Is a game yes, that will have me Pre-Ordering. And with others such as Mario on the way and the impressive Metroid. The visuals of the system are astounding.
However, my jaw dropped even more when I watched the latest video of the 'Reworked' Resident Evil. Nintendo's reputation just recently has been criticised due to a supposed stance of maintaining a 'Young approach' only. But Really, Nintendo rubbed it back into the face of the critics by sending Shigeru Miyamoto to unveil the Resident Evil Exclusives on the Gamecube Format alongside officials from Capcom.
From this, Nintendo have given the clearest statement yet, "that they will cater for all". But the Series needed a complete re-working, which is why GC has been chosen, due to the popularity and technical power. It will leave Sony a little red faced no doubt, considering the ties the series had with the Playstation franchise.
However much of the popularity of the Resident Evil franchise is because of the success of RE 2. In fact, many gamers never even played RE 1. Apparently, The creator of the Resident Evil series was not happy with Resident Evil 2 and 3, as he did not think they presented the same amount of fear that was in the original game. He will use the power of the GameCube to bring that greater level of fear and wonderful graphics.
While working on Resident Evil 4 for PS2; Capcom announced that the team experienced limitations because of the hardware of PS 2. That's why the team has decided to develop the games exclusive for GameCube, a console that has the power to handle it all. And put Sony in the gutter.
Anyway, just look at the Gamecube shots, perfect lighting and use of shadows and set dressing.
Just found out, Devil may Cry is still set for PS2.
But no guarantees of the Series Continuing on that system.
