Does anyone know when Turbo buttons on pc cases were wiped out + why were turbo buttons used? they didn't make much difference as far as i'm concerned, just thought i'd share that with you.

Oh, ok, thats a pretty good reason to have a turbo button, I don't know why I have one, must have been standard.

Turbo buttons (on 486s at least) actually slowed you PC down...their default state was on, and by pushing the button in, you could decrease the speed - I think that this was to improve compatibility with older applications, as programmers didn't allow for the increased speeds in future machines with their timing routines.

This was done away with in pentium machines...however, in 386s, the button actually did what it was meant too, and increased the speed in MHz when on. 486 ones didn't change the actual operating speed of the CPU.
