Today, the world saw an unprecedented and massive political move by two former enemies. NATO (containing the US) and Russia, released a joint press statement that they would stand together to fight oppression by terrorist factions. Barely 15 years ago this was an unthinkable situation. The very foundations of NATO were set for the western democracies to protect themselves against the Communist regimes directed by the former Soviet Union, today, they stand together. I believe this is a statement which stands higher than the fall of the Berlin wall as a state of the world today. NATO and Russia have found a common enemy in extremist terrorist groups worldwide, and are not scared to show a solidarity the world has never seen before. Any attempt to undermine the strength of Western society has failed, by it's own merits.
We have also seen the true face of the Israeli leadership in the past few days, using the shift of focus to America to attack and occupy Palestinian land in the West Bank. The Middle East is balancing on a fine line between peace and war, and the terrorist attacks in the US have only fueld an already volatile situation. Many people in the US will be incensed by the celebrations of Palestinians in the streets of it's cities, and may now support the actions of the Israeli administration againts these people, but occupying land is not an active fight against terrorism in the aream and this should not be tolerated as an excuse for these actions.
The role Pakistan play in this current situation is critical to stability of world peace. As of yet, there is no indication of what they will do if evidence is found that they have indirectly supported known terrorist regimes in the area and the neighbouring Afghanistan, but they can make a step to assure the peace of the world by co-operating and showing compassion for the cause and case brought to them by America and her allies, any other course of action can only result in a war in the area, which may evolve into the third world war. Iraq will surely get involved, if they have the capability, into any armed struggle against NATO forces, and will more than likely move into direct military opposition with Israel. But the capability of Iraq is unknown to us, the public.
The most important benefit of these attacks is that democracy gas prevailed, despite the secret nature of intelligence gathering which I for one have usually condemned, I know I have nothing to hide, and if these Echelon systems for example can help to deter and prevent anything of this nature ever happening again, I will not be one to object.
