So we're looking for a new broadband supplier again. Naturally Freeola is under consideration. ;)

I'm curious though how Enta's traffic shaping is working these days? We use a fair amount of bandwidth but 90% of it is off-peak (no p2p either). So I'm wondering what (if any) traffic shaping we'd encounter. I know some ISPs like to traffic shape their customers no matter what they pay for if they are high bandwidth users.

Also I understand we'd be able to see bandwidth usage with Freeola? Is that broken down into peak & off-peak or just a total?

Thanks Hmmm....

And apologies for the short reply Garin, but I was literally on a flying visit to view some of my test sites.

Hmmm.... pretty much goes into all the detail required.

Just to add my 2c...

The current Traffic Shaping measures (introduced on the 4th Nov 2009) do seem to have improved things.
Some of this may be due to the new system and some could be down to some Enta customers leaving and so freeing up bandwidth!

The restrictions now only affect "non-interactive bulk services, for example news groups and peer-to-peer. So the previous 'Black Mark' system has gone.

Another thing to look at it is how you are likely to 'connect'.
There are 10 IPSC nodes and 20 WBC (21CN) nodes around the country. You can't change which node you will permanently use!

You will know if your exchange is IPSC or WBC but you can't tell for sure which node you will get until you are up and running - only by guessing from your location or if others are on the same exchange as you.

I'm on the Faraday IPSC node which serves a large chunk of London/Kent.

These 'nodes' are often busy at different times of day.
Faraday(IPSC) is often still busy around lunch time - but no where near as bad as things were at the end of last year. In the evening/weekend Faraday can be very quiet (=good speeds) but other nodes are the reverse of this, meaning some people see slower speeds out of peak hours.

The bottom line for me is the new system (and with a change of userbase) is currently working well for me :¬)

Also remember Freeola don't have any tie-in contract so you can just try it for a month and see how you get on...

EDIT: Corrected my WBC/21CN link!

I think this answers my question actually. I suppose what I'm really concerned about is whether off-peak habits can have an effect on peak time usage.

Thanks.

The usage reads from your online acconut, and is updated daily. It reads as such.

Your plan (tariff)
Period dates
Amount off peak used
Amount peak used
Total used.

I'm kind of on a flying visit a the moment so can't go into detail on shapping fully, but there is a limited amount. It is focused around P2P downloading however, and browsing is not effected.

Don't know if this is any help Garin but my Freeola connection is really good.Just done a speedtest at peak hours and it's as fast as ever (very stable too).I have an Orange connection at work (only live about 1/2 mile away) from the same exchange and that ranges between 0.6 - 1.1 mbs and around this time of day is bordering on useless. My neighbour (lives 4 doors away) is getting about 3 mbs from his BT connection and says the speeds are all over the place. Both mentioned connections are supposed to be up to 8 mbs and unlimited.I'm sure the Freeola staff (as well as Hmmm....) will be able to answer your technical questions but speaking as a customer I can honestly say that I am very happy with the service I am getting.

Forgot to mention I regularly go over my bandwidth allocation, just get charged a small amount per extra GB (not sure exactly how much but it's not a lot).Haven't noticed any change in the performance of my connection so presume Enta cannot be doing any kind of throttling ?.

Hope this of some help.
