You probably can't, what with the formatting procedures and support from games etc.

Ps2 HDD will arrive in the US in March 2004 as part of a network package with final fantasy 11.
But with the PS3 expected in 2006 I'm not sure how popular it will be as it is rumoured to cost around £100 for the network package when it arrives over here.
Will need to have its uses to force people to buy them.

Good point. It would be a little impractical to launch and market a HDD for PS2 and then start all over again with the PS3. They're already losing profits as stated in another post.
Don't really care much for FFXI so wouldn't be too fussed about that. Plus - Everquest will fulfill everyones RPG needs for a long time won't it?
However, think of it this way, is it really worth Sony releasing the HDD in Europe when the PS3, which has hard drive capability, is looming so close to launch?
Some might argue that Final Fantasy XI requires the hard drive, but then again, you can't currently see Final Fantasy XI on any Official Sony European release schedule.
Which all leads me to think we'll only get a HDD when we get the PS3.
By the way, you don't need to chip your PS2 to install a hard drive. It's just that the hard drive won't work unless you do. I didn't realise brookfresh had gone and posted about using a modded console, thanks for bringing that to my attention. *Deletes brookfresh from favourites*
It was mentioned ages ago along with the Network Adapter but the HDD was never spoke of again.
The only thing they haven't worked out yet is how to get the drivers installed to actually make it useful (on the PAL version at least), although I'm sure some bright spark will find a way.
