I know this might sound a bit ridiculous, but it is worrying me, let me explain.
At the Moment MS is involved in a legal battle with the US government department of justice (DoJ). So Far they have come to the concussions that MS is a monopoly and has been acting illegal by engaging in anti competitive practices by bundling Internet Explorer with windows. In this was they have used their monopoly in the Operating systems market to gain a monopoly in the browser market. The appeals court has decided not to break Ms up (as was the original verdict), but merrily to give them a light slap on the wrist and say well we will let you off this time but just promise you don’t break the law again. I am sure this will make Netscape feel much better.
So what’s this got to do with the x box I hear you ask? Well bearing in mind MS already has a monopoly in the PC market which means they can charge high prices for there products than if they had a competitor to compete with. When there is competition in the market place prices come down and this is good for us consumers.
The x box is not even out yet but already they are planning it’s sequel to the x box which will make it obsolete. Called Home Station, it will be a kind’a of PC console hybrid and use MS .NET which is MS’s gateway to the Internet. Yes they will be able to monitor all that you do. .Net will also be used in the up coming Windows XP too.
Don’t they do this kind of thing with Windows. They bring out one version which is supposed to fix certain problems and be easier to use and then start marketing the next one which is supposed to fix certain problems and be easier to use.
What I want to ask (and what is worrying me) is do we want to live in a world where computer technology is just dominated by one company with no competition from any one else. And should any one else have a good idea MS will simply use its superior financial mussel to make sure it comes out on top weather or not it is best or the consumer or the computer industry?
Comments welcome.
> Many of your fears have been removed. MS no longer has a court case against it.
Well rumour has it that this is only becase the new bush administration is friendly to business.
But they do have a monopoly and they have broken the law. These facts are not in dispute. Even the DoJ thinks so.
The reason they are not doing anything is because breaking up the company will be bad for Microsoft and possibly the computer industry too. Pitty they can't find some middle ground to stop MS walking all over its competitors unfairly.
There's about 20 for the US launch, with another 15 titles out the following week.
By the time it's released over here, we should get LOADS of launch titles, in theory.
If, like you say MS charge for bug ridden products then gamers will simply look to Sony and Nintendo.
It would be like Pace using the DC architecture in their set top boxes.
You're almost forced to use it (and everything with it - Office etc) because it comes bundled with new PC's.
But I can't see the same problems (if it really is a problem) with consoles. No one is going to force you to buy an XBox.
It's not as if whenever you buy a new telly, an XBox will come bundled with it.
