Japan and South Korea are in as hosts.
Frace qualify as holders.
The African groups are finished, with the following 5 teams qualifying:
Cameroon
Nigeria
Senegal
Tunisia
South Africa
Argentina have gained enough points so far to qualify from the South American group.
Costa Rica have gained enough points to qualify from the central and northern American group.
Europes qualifers so far are:
Poland
Sweden
Spain
A few surpirses there already, with Senegal qualifying above Morocco, and Costa Rica topping the CONCACAF group!
So which other teams will make up the remaining spaces?
Starting with the CONCACAF group it looks like it will be two from three, Honduras, Mexico, and the USA. If Honduras can avoid defeat in Mexico they could send either the USA or Mexico out, though my money is on USA and Mexico to make it through.
There's still a long way to go in the Asain qualifying section, with Iran and Saudi Arabia looking good in group A, and China doing well in group B.
I expect it will be China and Saudi Arabia that qualify automatically, and Iran that go on to the play-off in Europe.
The South American league finds Brazil in a surprisingly weak position with only 3 games remaining. They're currently 4th, so should make it! Other teams looking likley to qualify are Paraguay and Ecuador, though Uruguay and Columbia could overtake them yet. The team in 5th place will face a playoff against Australia.
I think we'll see Paraguay, Uruguay and Brazil joining Argetina, and qualifying automatically, with Ecuador being defeated in the playoff by Australia!
Europe sees the most places still up for grabs though:
Group 1 should be won by Russia, who only need a point at home to Switzerland. Slovenia should take the playoff spot with a home win over the Faroe Islands.
Group 2 sees Portugal and Ireland locked on 21 points. Portugals vastly superior goal difference will see them qualify automatically, and Ireland in the playoffs.
Group 3 should be won by Denmark, a home win over Iceland will ensure that. Czech Republic play Bulgaria for the playoff spot, with Bulgaria needing to win, so I'd bet on the Czech's.
Group 4 is all over. Sweden winners, Turkey runners up.
Group 5 sees Poland already qualified with Ukraine and Belarus fighting for the final spot. Both teams are away, but Belarus have the easier game but will need a win. I'd go for Belarus to win over Wales, and the Ukraine to only manage a draw in Poland, putting Belarus in the playoffs.
Group 6 is close. Belgium are currently on top, but they travel to Croatia in their final game. If Croatia win, they win the group. I image they'll do it, dooming Belium to the playoffs. Scotland don't really have a chance.
Group 7 was won by Spain. The final spot will go to Israel if they manage to beat Austria at home. I see this game ending in a draw though, with Austria making the playoffs.
Group 8 finds Italy on top, with Romania 2 points behind. Italy's superior goal difference means that a draw at home in their final match against Hungary would win them the group.
Group 9 is the tightest of all, with England and Germany both on 16 points. After hammering the Germans 5-1 Engaland have a superior goal difference, think of their final games as a shooting match, with England having a 6 goal start. So if Engalnd win 1-0 against Greece, Germany must beat Finland by 7 goals! Expect England to get the win, with Germany having to cancel their frendlies and go to the playoffs!
So, onto the playoffs:
I predict the following matches:
Belgium vs Czech Republic
Belarus vs Germany
Austria vs Turkey
Slovenia vs Romania
Ireland vs Iran
And I predict the followign teams will make it through.
Czech Republic
Germany (damn)
Turkey
Romania
Ireland
So, the full 32 teams for the World Cup in Japan and Korea next June will be, (by my reckoning):
Japan
South Korea
Saudi Arabia
China
Cameroon
Nigeria
Senegal
Tunisia
South Africa
Argentina
Paraguay
Brazil
Uruguay
Australia
Costa Rica
Mexico
USA
France
Spain
Poland
Sweden
Russia
Portugal
Denmark
Croatia
Italy
England
Czech Republic
Germany
Turkey
Romania
Republic of Ireland
You just see if I'm wrong!
Overall, I'm not sure. I'll make my predictions once the draw for the groups has been made in December.
Argentina are good right now, but they have disappointed in the last few World Cups.
France, to me, seem to have gotten too cocky. You know they lost to Australia recently?
You can never look past the Italians, becasue no matter how poorly they play, they always manage to get through!
I think it's really great that there are already a few surprise teams in there like Senegal, Costa Rica and Poland, and it will be interesting to see if China make it, given that the average height of their players in probably only 5 foot.
If I remember rightly the time difference will mean the games will be on during the morning and afternoon rather than early morning, but I can't be too sure!
WORLD CUP WINNERS 2002 -- ENGLAND.
We will do it. :o)
I cant look further than France to win it again - England will get to the quarter finals and lose on penalties!!
I doubt France will win it next year. They have had a great few years (world and european champs) but I just don't see a European team winning in Japan 2002. World cup winners seem to alternate between Europe and South America. I am not sure what the odds are but my money will go on Argentina.
I think they are currently the best team out there.
I'd like to see us get to the quarter finals, but I'm no way hoping for any more than that....
