Competition is healthy. Take the PC market for example there is really only one brand to choose, Microsoft. This is bad as it restricts choice and means Microsoft decide the way in which the PC world is going to go.
With consoles there are now 3 huge corporations all going out for your money and this is good. Sony, Nintendo and Microsoft are all going to offer you what they believe to be the best console around. Competition means this :-
Lower prices
If Sony were to release the PS2 at 100 and then Nintendo released GC at £400,which would sell? PS2...exactly. If Nintendo were the only company then we would have no choice. No one buys the higher price so they reduce their prices - we have more money to spend on games. :-) (These prices are completely inaccurate I know - I'm sure the GC won't be £400 and the PS2 isn't £100....shame!).
Better games
All the consoles want the best games so they will build stunning games to attract new customers to their console. GT3, Zelda, Halo - might not have happened without competition.
Games developers more choice
Each console has its own specifications - certian games work better on certain consoles so each console has games that make use of all the consoles little extras.
The growth of the industry
With 3 major companys advertising their goods all over the world and more and more people buying consoles the games industry will rapidly grow which in the future will mean even better games!!!!!!
I used to belive console wars was bad but now I know its good.
"Fight, fight, fight, fight!!".
Just think... if there was only once game's company, would they keep making there games better and better? Of course they wouldn't because they have got no competion and we would not know anything better. Many people hate the rivary between Nintendo and Sony but they are infact resposible for the great games we play today.
Again, good post.
*Clap, clap*
Your point is true when it comes to their own programs in that nothing else has a chance, but I thought it was stuff like Brother, Dell and all those other companies that actually make the PCs.
I'm a Nintendo fan and I was eagerly awaiting the GBA and Gamecube.
The Gamecube had already confirmed to be cheap and a great value for money.
I thought that the Gameboy Advance would follow suit.
Unfortunately, Nintendo are charging 35 pounds for Nes/Snes games. They've made very few new games. It seems that now they've dominated the handheld market, they're milking it for all it's worth.
They could argue that they're concentrating on the Gamecube but then there's still not excuse for not putting the mario's on one cart instead of releasing them one at a time. And 35 pounds is way too much for 16bit game made 10 years ago.
Let's hope that there's never one company dominating the console market.
