i was just wondering if anyone out there feels the slightest twinge of doubt about the way microsoft has gradually insinuated what amounts to spyware into it's
operating system.....what with windows xp's new security system taking a fingerprint of the pc its'installed on and reports on the web of win xp sending information to an ip in egypt all with the co-operation of the F.B.I. to track pirates

it kinda makes you wonder if any of this spyware will be integrated into the x-box......but most of all just what infomation is being gathered....bearing in mind all the new security measures are supposedly being put in place to foil software piracy does this mean a user of non geniune software will in the future be reported to the authorities..?? or even more likely will we all end up having to pay a monthly fee to use windows or a similar future operating system...any thoughts...

I dont like spyware and believe Microsoft may be going to far with XP. Having your details transmitted to anyone is annoying, and should be classified as an invasion of your human rights. All this means is Microsoft can sell you details to companies to get cash, meaning you get junk mail while Bill gets rich. I got to emails today from a canadian fishing company, both with attached viruses. How did they get my details??? I dont surf fishing sites let alone canadian fishing sites. An OS should run applications, and do nothing else if applications have spyware thats fine as you can choose not to use them. But with the OS we have little choice.

Plus XP is an OS that may refuse to work if you upgrade your computer??? Thats just darn annoying.

so to sum up.....microsoft have introduced new security measures which amount to installing spy ware in their operating system...
this we are told will help the multi million dollar company combat piracy
but instead of concentrating their resources on the far east or putting pressure on the governments of these other countries and trying to stop the flood of ilegal copies coming from them, the ms corp decides it is much more in their interest to seek out and prosecute individuals in the countries which are among the lowest percentage of illegal copy users........oh and why not gather a bit of marketing information in the process (without asking)after all such information is as good as dollars in the bank and eminently sellable.........yeah good plan microsoft......

yeah what you say is true .....up to a point but i bet you wouldnt be complacent if your personal information was being used for marketing purposes.....or indeed if some unauthorised person got hold of that information and used it unscrupulously....in my opinion the only time anyone's information should be gathered is if permission is first obtained..and security and privacy guaranteed 100%....
remember...information is power....ask any hacker...........

I think Microsoft should have implemented spyware with the NT series of OS and not wait until XP was released.

When stories like this break, you have to sift through what is factual and what is fiction. Which is very difficult to do, because how many people in the world can read and understand XP's source code fully enough to realise exactly what it is doing? Not a great deal of people.

What I would say is that if Microsoft have implemented a system in their XP OS to recognise when a copy of their software is being used on another computer without being registered, then good on them.

Anyone who uses pirate copies of any software deserves all they get in my opinion.

In terms of privacy laws, what possible damaging information is being transmitted without our knowledge? Nothing that should bother us, a serial number for a motherboard and the system's configuration details would be mostly what is needed I would have thought, so where's the harm in anyone getting hold of that information?

As for spyware in the X-Box, again, what possible harm could it do? If anything it's more of a market research tool (if it IS implemented), telling Microsoft what types of games people like to play, how long they play for, what they download etc., which, like anti-piracy moves, can only lead to good things in my view.
