Well for me its discovering under-rated and peculiar games which on first glance I would never have dreamed of playing, never mind buying.
At the moment the only console I own is a Dreamcast - this is mainly due to my chronic cash shortage - but seeing that only a handful of new DC games are left for release, I have taken to exploring the Dreamcast's back catalogue - both PAL and import games alike.
And herein lies my newfound gaming enjoyment.
At the moment I have three games winging their way to me in the post: "Tokyo Bus Guide", "The Ring", and "Cannon Spike". I haven't a clue if these titles are any good or not, but that really isn't the point. The feeling of journeying into the unknown is where it's at for me these days. It all brings back memories of my early escapades into the wonderful world of computer games.
Of course I still buy the big mainstream releases, but picking up neglected games at ridiculously cheap prices has recharged my interest in gaming, which I must admit was up until recently on the wane.
I would advise everyone to become a gaming explorer. Keep your expectations realistic, and the rewards can be high.
Also, don't always trust what negative reviewers say - you never truly know what you're gonna like.
> pessimism is the route to happiness?
It certainly is.
So is maso... err... I didn't say anything!
*Runs off whipping himself*
:-D
The games that had the biggest effect on me were one that I'd played first hand without reading about them or hearing about them.
That's where lower scale games can pleasantly surprise.
