Before I became another victim to SR's death trap I was happy just filling my time playing pool with my friends or playing my console.
well, I haven't played on my console in ages, I think I played Tetrisphere (what a game!) about a week ago, and that was my last game, it's strange I don't even play my PC games!
So whats happening to me? is it because I want a reply to my posts and I want to be able to reply as quickly as possible? well, I just don't know, there doesn't seem to be much keeping me here.
it's a like the twilight zone, you come in, but you never really leave.....
Console games at the moment are a living room affair, involving 1 player usually, and up to four. The storyline is pre-determined by the game, and your task is to get from the start of the game to the end.
It's the lure that there are other actual real-life people here that draws us in. It is a game, with the GAD comps and so on, but the appeal lies in the interaction of others. You turn on your console, stick your disc/cart in and you know whats going to happen, drive a few laps or shoot some people or whatever. Coming here, though you know that it's people posting their views, has the bonus that it can go in any direction, limited to any users imagination, not just the storyline that is on the disc.
Games are trying to develop this, with AI, multiple story routes and so on, but until there is significant development in AI (which could end all earth if it goes out of control...), it will not be as such an in-depth experience that playing with a human is. The more immediate future is on-line.
On-line gaming will have the best of both worlds. Games will run beautiful graphics, with the fun of driving your laps or shooting some people, but it will have the human interaction that current home experiences lack. Meeting actual people in on-line villages on your RPG and actually talking to them like you are here. Pre race banter over who will win the next race. Things like these will make the games come to life, giving the user the feeling that they are actually taking part in the grand prix rather than buying the game of it.
Until broadband goes mainstream and developers learn to take advantage of its powers, we can only guesswhat will happen, and in the meantime we will play our games and chat here, happy that the future of our topics is in capable hands.
