We are fast approaching the launches of the GameCube™ and the X-box, in America at least. But what do they really have to offer? Having had a flick through issue 59 of N64 Magazine I am now fully convinced of the GC and the new era it will bring to gaming.

Have you seen the screen shots of Rogue Leader? Astounding. These are sooo nice. Even Turbonutter will have a hard time denying that the GC has a lot of power inside that Fisher Price case. The ground is textured. There are curvy hills. Not ones that just suddenly start going up from the ground at angles. The graphics are crisp, well defined, animated, and quite frankly amazing. This is a first wave game. The GC was said to be easy to develop for, but this is ridiculously good for a first wave game. Imagine what it will be like when the console reaches its zenith graphically.

It also has a good variety of games. Apart from Rougue Leader, there are snowboarding games (SSX Tricky), adventure games (Galleon), fighting games (Smash Brothers Melee), shooters (Turok Evolution) racing games (Wave Race) sports games (FIFA and Madden) and weird games (Animal Forest, Super Monkey Ball and Animal Leader).

The N64 had a lot of quality games, but not a lot of choice in some areas. The GC looks like that it will have the quality and the quantity.

The controller is another subject. It has a lot of buttons, so it should be easy to control players/characters/cars in games. But I do not really like the shape of it. OK, I have yet to hold one but it looks like it might be uncomfortable, to me anyway.

So even from the initial games, screen shots, and rumours, I can see that the GC has a lot of potential. And then there is the unconfirmed. Perfect Dark 2 and Conkers BFD 2 are ones that will be produced by Rare eventually. They have to be. Zelda will make an appearance, or two. Mario, well the little plumber has staying power and I expect to see him in at least 3 games, not all platformers, during the GC's life.

So then I will have to get a GameCube.

And on to the next console. The Microsoft X-box. It should be the most powerful.

I think that the X-box will be a good platform. It will hopefully have the games to match the very good hard ware. It should produce outstanding visuals. I have been away over the summer and have not been very attentive to the latest news on releases on any platform, so if any of this has since changed let me know. Of the games that were in development, announced or as yet unofficially announced but in existence, the ones that seened to be the best were Munch's Oddysee, Malice, Halo, MGS, Tony Hawks and possibly SSX.

These are good sounding, if a little unoriginal. But I do think that these along with Sega's games will make the X-box very good. I think that it deserves a bit more support from gamers. It does not as yet have very much hype, proven when you ask Joe Public for his opinion on the X-box. He normally replies "What's an X-box?" so I think that Microsoft have to start their advertising soon.

The fact that the X-box even exists amazes me. For the worlds biggest software company, mainly domestic and business software mind, not games, to announce that they are making a games console is ludicrous. I only hope that it is as successful as it deserves to be. I think that Microsoft should be lauded for joining the market. The X-box has not proven itself to me as well as the GC, yet. I still plan on buying one though. If possible on launch day.

I think that it is possible for the X-box to be like the original PS was, new with lots of games and add-ons, and innovative. At first the PS revolutionised gaming, it brought it to the masses. The next generation consoles are just an improvement, like Master System to Mega Drive, and therefore they will not revolutionise gaming, but at the very least, let us hope they re-vitalise gaming. I think it was Goatboy who recently said that he was bored of gaming, I hope that these new conosles can cure this boredom.

What do you think? Are you convinced about the potential of the GameCube™ and the X-box? Will you get one? What games excite you the most? Tell me.

It could be our culture of reading the tabloid press - that is to say, people aren't used to reading articles that are longer than a paragraph or two...

I think the GC has proven its self to me.

I've always been a big Nintendo fan and although I've switched to Sony, I'm still interested in what nintendo have to offer.

if i get a real good job in the near future i may get a game cube as well, although probably not at launch.
