According to reports in the Italian press, the rumours concerning a possible connection between McLaren and young Finnish star Kimi Raikkonen are more serious than many may have originally thought. Peter Sauber, head of the Swiss outfit that currently employs the rookie, has revealed that the Woking outfit are definitely interested in his driver and that negotiations will be taking place over the coming weeks.

Prior to this, Sauber has denied any mention of Kimi making a switch, however it is thought that Sauber are looking to use a different engine supplier next season, parting ways with Ferrari power. Apparently, they no longer wish to run with year old engines, as is the case with Ferrari, despite the fact that the engines currently in use won last years world titles, something next year's supply would also be able to boast.

Rumours indicate that the Swiss team are highly interested in the Mercedes powerplant and a possible deal between them could see Raikkonen with McLaren and Sauber with Mercedes. However, it is still unknown exactly whose place Kimi would take in the Woking team, with Coulthard saying his deal is done for another year and Hakkinen's manager, Keke Rosberg, stating there are no problems there either. Hopefully, all will be revealed in the very near future.

Strange indeed. Engine and driver swaps, Sauber being left one driver short. It's all a bit late in the season to be doing all this I would have thought.

I can only see Sauber as the loosers in all of the this.

The Ferrari engine is blatantly the most reliable out there. Even if they use this years engine next year, whats wrong with that? The engine has proven itself to have the reliability. Ok, it's not as powerful as the BMW, but nothing is!

Also, if Suaber loosed Raikkonen, they could be in the poop. He is a quality young driver and Sauber should try and hang on to him as long as possible.

Don't forget that McLaren still have Alex Wurz under contract to be their test driver.

I get the feeling that Raikkonen will only go to McLaren if Hakkinen doesn't sign for next year. But according to his manager both MK and DC have signed for next year.

If thats the case, why hasn't it been announced yet?

I agree with you though, Sauber would be mad to throw away this years Ferrari engines. I really can't think that next Mercedes will be better than this years Ferrari, certainly not in the reliability stakes anyway.

I imagine there'll be an announcement at Monza, so we'll have to wait and see.

Oh yeah, one of the Williams on pole at Monza, mark my words. Expect a tidy result for Bennetton as well.

Hakkinen is bound to sign for another year and put us all through more misery.

Raikkonen will do a better job at Sauber than Mclaren. Because if Hakkinen did sign, that would only leave a test driver seat available. Raikkonen would be better placed in a race seat.

Sauber must be mad to throw away Ferrari engines. Unless they have a plan to get something better......
