i read somewhere in this forum where you could get the option of getting teh ps1 games to have 12x quicker loading times and smoother textures...

In the options screen of the PS2 menu system there is the PS1 config. You can set the load speed to fast and graphics to texture wrap (or something). These settings are reset to default when the PS2 is reset.
The texture wrapping is a bit dodgy. works on some games and does improve the looks of most, though it can be iffy. Flights of stairs go transparent in Metal Gear and things like that.
The loading time one is a bit dodgy too. If your game streams any ofthe music or the sounds directly from the cd, then the drive reads it too quick and it comes out as rubbish. I thought my copy of the Spice Girls game was in finnish until I worked it out.
PS. I owned Spice girls the game because I saw it on Swapitshop for 20 points and thought it might be funny. And it was, the first time (when we were very drunk...)

I can't 'walk you through' as I'm at work... but check the manual that came with your PS2.
You can access the necessary options from the Browser screen - but you have to set them every time you play a PS1 game, as they're not stored anywhere.
Some games don't work with the options switched on, and some look worse - so it's trial and error.
