Malicious Software Report - W32/Apost-A
Detail
======
Name: W32/Apost-A
Type: Win32 worm
Date: 3 September 2001
A virus identity file (IDE) which provides protection is
available now from our website and will be incorporated
into the October 2001 (3.50) release of Sophos Anti-Virus.
Sophos has received several reports of this worm from the wild.
Description:
W32/Apost-A is an email-aware worm which makes use of the
Microsoft Outlook mail client.
The worm arrives in an email with the following characteristics:
Subject line: 'As per your request!'
Message body: 'Please find attached file for your review. I
look forward to hear from you again very soon.
Thank you.'
When the attached file is executed it will try to copy itself to
the floppy drive. It will also copy itself to
C:windowsreadme.exe and add the Registry key
HKLMSoftwareMicrosoftWindowsCurrentVersionRunmacrosoft
= C:windowsreadme.exe.
The worm then sends itself to people listed in the Outlook
address book.
Finally the worm displays a dialog box with the title 'Urgent!'
and a single large button labelled 'open'. When clicked the worm
will attempt to copy itself to the floppy drive again and will
display another dialog box, this time with the title 'WinZip
SelfExtractor: Warning' and the text 'CRC error: 234#21'.
what's new about this
> one?
I got an email about it at work warning me about it from my company.
I thought I'd share it with people on here to try and stop other people getting it.
Only trying to help, next time I won't bother, then I'll laugh my face off while you have to go and format your computer shall I?
